Devils Put Away Pirates, 5-2

PORTLAND, Maine - The Lowell Devils punched their first-ever trip to the Calder Cup Playoffs by virtue of a 5-2 win over the Portland Pirates on Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Lowell broke open a 1-1 game with three goals in the middle period including a pair of tallies 53 seconds apart. Nathan Perkovich gave the Devils their second lead of the match with a power play marker at 3:07 as he cut to the front of the net to knock Matt Taormina's point shot past J.P. Lamoureux.

During a delayed penalty less than a minute later, Cory Murphy made it 3-1 whens he got piece of Tim Sestito's one-timer from the high slot for his fifth goal of the year.

Ben Walter then gave the Devils a three-goal cushion at 11:31, sweeping in a rebound after Lamoureux had trouble handling Stephen Gionta's snapshot from the near circle.

The Devils were able to break a scoreless tie at 11:01 of the first with the help of their third shorthanded goal of the season. Matt Halischuk worked past Portland defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani before shifting the puck to his forehand and tucking his 11th goal of the season inside the right post.

Alexander Vasyunov added his 15th of the season at 6:32 of the third, while the Pirates' Marc-Andre Gragnani completed the scoring with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

Jeff Cowan knotted the score, 1-1, with 26.9 seconds left until the first intermission, setting up camp to the left of McKenna and swatting a loose puck across the goal line.

McKenna made 32 saves for his 24th win of the season, matching his AHL-career best. Lamoureux took the loss with 14 saves on 18 shots over two periods of work. Beau Erickson stopped 6-of-7 in the third in his AHL debut.

The Lowell Devils finish the regular season on Sunday, Apr. 11 as they battle the Providence Bruins at 4:00PM at the Tsongas Center.
