Adirondack Phantoms News Release

GLENS FALLS, NY - A low scoring game through two periods erupted into a wild finish with a combined 124 penalty minutes as the Adirondack Phantoms dropped their season finale 3-2 to the Albany River Rats on Saturday night in front of a standing-room-only sellout crowd of 4,968 fans at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

In a primarily defensive first period, the River Rats struck first when Brad Herauf's wild shot from the right circle ricocheted off teammate Mike Angelidis and into the net at 5:03. It was one of only a few offensive chances for both teams as they combined for just 11 total shots on goal in the first.

The game opened up slightly in the second period, but both goaltenders, Jeremy Duchesne for Adirondack and Justin Peters for Albany, were sharp in their nets. Things changed dramatically in the third period.

There were more than a few worn out vocal chords amongst the sellout crowd in a chaotic final twenty minutes, where the clubs combined for four goals, two fights, several post-whistle pileups and 112 penalty minutes. Jon Kalinski tied the game just 68 seconds into the period. David Laliberte found Kalinski all alone at the top of the crease and he faked out Peters before sliding in a forehand for his 10th goal of the year. Albany answered back at 7:11 on a three-on-two counter-attack where Chris Terry set up Angelidis for his second goal of the night for a 2-1 River Rats lead. Danny Syvret bombed home a one-timer from the point for a power play goal at 12:43, assisted by Erik Gustafsson and Patrick Maroon; the assist for Gustafsson meant the rookie defenseman closed the season with a five-game point streak (7 points). But once again, Albany mustered a response as Oskar Osala fired in a rebound off a shot from Jiri Tlusty at 14:31 to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. The Phantoms pulled Duchesne for the extra attacker with 80 seconds left, but the River Rats held on for the narrow victory.

Justin Peters stopped 27-of-29 shots for his 26th win, helping Albany improve to 43-29-3-5 on the season. Jeremy Duchesne turned in a strong performance as he made 26 saves on 29 shots, but as tagged with the loss as Adirondack closes out the season with a record of 32-41-3-4. The teams finished with an even 29 shots apiece; Adirondack was 1-for-5 on the power play, while Albany was 0-for-6 with the man-advantage.
