Portland, Maine - Ben Walter collected a goal and an assist to lead the Lowell Devils to a 5-2 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 5,656 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Nathan Perkovich, Tim Sestito, Alexander Vasyunov and Matt Halischuk also scored for the Devils while Olivier Magnan and Matt Taormina collected two assists. The Devils improved to 38-31-4-6 with the win and clinched a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Cody McCormick and Marc-Andre Gragnani scored for the Pirates, who despite the loss clinched second in the Atlantic Division as a result of Manchester 2-0 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The Pirates, now 44-24-7-4, will face the Manchester Monarchs in the opening round of the post season beginning with home games Friday, April 16th and Saturday, April 17th.
Halischuk opened the scoring midway through the first period with a shorthanded tally, which was answered by McCormick with less than thirty seconds left in the first to tie the game at one after one. The Devils took the game over in the second scoring all three goals to build a 4-1 lead after two. Perkovich and Sestito struck within 53 seconds of one another to allow the Devils to jump into a 3-1 lead and Walter capped the period to make it 4-1 Lowell after two. Vasyunov and Gragnani traded goals in the third to complete the scoring.
The Pirates out shot the Devils 34-25 in the game. J.P. Lamoureux took the loss allowing four goals on 18 shots through two periods. Beau Erickson made his AHL debut in the third and allowed one goal on seven shots.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were 1. Walter; 2. Portland defenseman Joe DiPenta and 3. McCormick.
The Pirates Regular Season comes to a close tomorrow (Sunday) at the Cumberland County Civic Center when the Worcester Sharks visit for a 4 p.m. start. It's PeoplesChoice Credit Union Fan Appreciation Day as select fans will win the shirt right off the back of their favorite player at the end of the game. The UNUM Challenge concludes with the Sharks leading 4-3. It's USA Hockey Member Appreciation Night.
