Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, were pleased to announce the winners of their 14th annual year-end awards prior to their game versus the Peoria Rivermen on Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at MTS Centre.
Moose goaltender Cory Schneider was awarded three awards on the night including the Insta-Frame Galleries Most Valuable Player Award for the 2009-10 season. Schneider, 24, has appeared in 59 games so far this season for the Moose where he has compiled a 34-23-2 record. The Marblehead, MA native has established three franchise records this season with the most games played by a goaltender in a single season (59 games), the most wins in a single season by any Moose netminder (34 games) and most minutes ever played by a Moose goaltender (3492). Schneider was also awarded the Maaco 3 Stars Award after being named a star of the game 25 times this season - with 10 of those being first-star honors. He was also crowned with the Remax Most Popular Player Award, as voted by the fans on an online poll.
Manitoba Moose forward Marco Rosa received the TFI Financial Services Leading Scorer Award after his best season in his pro career. So far this season, the Scarborough, ON. native is the team leader in scoring with 55 points. He leads the Moose in goals (22), assists (33), as well as powerplay goals (8), powerplay assists (11) and in shots (193). The 28 year old centre holds the team's season standard so far for the longest points streak (6 games), and assists streak (4 games).
Moose right-winger Guillaume Desbiens was a two-time winner this season being awarded both the Cargill-Julian Klymkiw Community Service Award and the Manitoba Blue Cross Unsung Hero Award.
He has participated in a long list of off-ice initiatives this season, both with the hockey club and on his own time, including attending the Children's Rehabilitation Centre in December to visit with young patients; visiting Ecole Provencher in February to read to an elementary classroom as part of the "Respond to Reading Program" in conjunction with Red River College; and visited a backyard rink in March to play a game of shinny with this year's winner of the "Home Depot Backyard Rink" promotion. This player was also Manitoba's nominee for AHL man of the Year for the 2009-10 season.
Other year-end award winners included defenseman Travis Ramsey who won the Toyota "Never Quits" Hardest Working Player Award after appearing in every single game this season. As well, Moose newcomer Sergei Shirokov was named the Lawton Partners Rookie of the Year, while veteran Lawrence Nycholat was given the Payworks Best Defencemen Award.
