Augusta Lynx News Release
Lynx This Week
Tuesday, February 21 @ Pensacola Ice Pilots - 8 pm
Thursday, February 23 @ Pensacola Ice Pilots - 8 pm
The Lynx lead the season series 3-2-0 heading to Pensacola for a two game series against the Ice Pilots Tuesday and Thursday. The last two contests have required overtime to settle the score, with Augusta winning both. Last time they met, the Lynx got the tying goal from Ryan Lang and an overtime winner from Sam Ftorek in a 6-5 win in Augusta on February 17. Nicolas Corbeil leads all scorers in the series with three goals and seven points. The Lynx have faced four different goaltenders in the season series against the Ice Pilots thus far, with only Frederic Cloutier managing a win (2-0-0, 2.00 GAA, .947 save %). Both Cloutier and Todd Ford are on recall to the AHL, leaving Pensacola with David Cann as their starter. Cann allowed the six goals on 40 Lynx shots in the 6-5 loss last week.
Saturday, February 25 @ South Carolina Stingrays - 7 pm South Carolina hosts the Lynx for fifth and final time as the two teams complete their ten game regular season series this weekend. Augusta holds a 5-4-0 edge so far, posting a 2-2-0 mark on the road. This game is especially important to both teams as they enter the week separated by only two points for the fifth playoff position in the American Conference Southern Division. Last time the two teams faced off, Davis Parley made 32 saves to hold the fort in a 2-1 Stingrays win. Four of the nine meetings have been decided by one goal this season.
Week In Review
Tuesday, February 14 - Augusta 6 vs. Gwinnett 5 A back and forth affair between the Lynx and Gladiators got the crowd boiling at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center on Tuesday. Gwinnett opened with a pair of goals before the Lynx got going, with Nicolas Corbeil and Doug Wright sandwiching a Cam Brown goal for a 3-2 Gladiators edge after 20 minutes. Ryan Lang scored the lone goal of the middle frame to even the contest, and in the third Gwinnett would twice take the lead only to see it evaporate on goals by Martin Lapointe and Brian Passmore. Finally, with 13 seconds remaining, the Gladiators took an icing that would prove fateful. On the ensuing play Ryan Lang scored with just 8 seconds remaining to give the Lynx an emotional win and a 3-0-0 record at home against the Gladiators this season.
Friday, February 17 - Augusta 6 vs. Pensacola 5 (OT)
Again, Augusta fell behind 2-0 in the contest early in the opening frame but would rally for four straight markers over the final ten minutes of the period. Brian Passmore, Nicolas Corbeil, Joel Stepp, and Chris Leinweber would make it a 4-2 game for Augusta heading into the second, where the Ice Pilots came back to life with a pair of goals to tie the game at 4-4 after 40 minutes. From there, the Lynx dropped down a goal early on but rallied to force overtime on Ryan Lang's tip-in at 10:39 of the third period. In the extra period, Sam Ftorek uncorked a thundering blast from the blue line that beat goaltender David Cann up high, ringing in off the crossbar to give Augusta their second straight dramatic win.
Saturday, February 18 - Augusta 5 vs. Columbia 2 The Lynx jumped ahead of I-20 rival Columbia with a pair of first-period goals from Chris Leinweber and Dan Sullivan, but the Inferno evened the score with a pair of second period markers. Knotted at 2-2 in the third, the Lynx scored three unanswered goals to win going away. Sullivan and Leinweber would both mark again, followed by Brian Passmore's insurance marker for a 5-2 victory. Jason Wolfe earned this third straight win with 28 saves while Jani Hurme took the loss with 22 stops.
Lundberg Returns
The Lynx received defenseman Eric Lundberg back from the Albany River Rats of the AHL earlier this week. In 12 games with the Rats, Lundberg was a +3 with no points and six minutes in penalties. He returned to the lineup February 18, collecting an assist in Augusta's 5-2 win over Columbia. The team released veteran defenseman John Whitwell to make room for Lundberg.
