ECHL Olympic Update For February 21

February 21, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release


PRINCETON, N.J. - There are 25 players from the ECHL and former Wheeling and current Team USA coach Peter Laviolette who have been competing in ice hockey at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

Nine of the 12 teams had an ECHL player on their roster led by Latvia which has eight former ECHL players including current Stockton Thunder Maris Ziedins.

Here is a look at how some of the former ECHL players performed on Tuesday:

Vitali Yeremeyev (Charlotte, 2000-02) made 30 saves in Kazakhstan's 5-2 win against Latvia.

Aigars Cipruss (Nashville, 1994-96) scored a goal and Sergei Naumov (Greensboro, 2000-01) made 25 saves in Latvia's 5-2 loss to Kazakhstan.

David Aebischer (Chesapeake and Wheeling, 1997-98) made 32 saves in Switzerland's 3-3 tie with Italy.

Tony Iob (Erie, 1992-93) scored a goal and Jason Cirone (Birmingham, 1993-94) had an assist in Italy's 3-3 tie with Switzerland.

Milan Hnilicka (Richmond, 1993-94) stopped all eight shots he faced and Tomas Vokoun (Wheeling, 1995-96) made five saves for the Czech Republic in its 3-2 loss to Canada.

Scott Gomez (Alaska, 2004-05) scored a goal and had an assist in the United States' 5-4 loss to Russia.
