Ziedins ends Olympic quest

Torino, ITALY - Stockton Thunder forward Maris Ziedins went scoreless as Latvia ended its 2006 Winter Olympic tournament run in a 5-2 preliminary round loss to Kazakhstan on Tuesday at Torino Esposizioni.

The loss drops Latvia to a final 0-4-1 tournament record, and exits the tournament in sixth place in the preliminary Group B standings.

Ziedins, who finishes the tournament with one goal in five games, registered two shots on goal and recorded two penalty minutes in the contest. Goals by Leondis Tambijevs and Aigars Cipruss aided Latvia to a 2-2 draw into the third period's early stages, until Kazakhstan responded with three late goals in less than six minutes to seal the game.

Yevgeniy Koreshkov led Kazakhstan's offense with two goals and two assists, while Nikolai Antropov (Toronto Maple Leafs), Sergey Alexandrov and Alexandr Koreshkov added goals on the Kazakhstan side.

Ziedins is slated to return to the Thunder as probable for Saturday's home game against the Bakersfield Condors at Stockton Arena.
