Lynx take down Pilots for fourth straight wins

February 21, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Jeff Mason set up the game-tying goal and then scored the game winner with just 2:34 remaining in regulation time as the cardiac Lynx surged from behind to overtake the Pensacola Ice Pilots 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Augusta's victory gives them their longest win streak of the year with four in a row, and puts them in a fifth place tie with the South Carolina Stingrays, who also have 50 points through Tuesday night.

Pensacola (17-29-6) opened the scoring 1:11 into the second period on a goal by Shaun Landolt, who then set up his team's second marker just 30 seconds later by Brendan Cook. Augusta (23-25-4) fought back after falling behind 2-0 for the third time in four games, notching a Dan Sullivan power play marker at 6:47 followed by a Ryan Lang even strength marker at 10:09 to knot the game at 2-2.

Adam Courchaine gave Pensacola the lead back with a power play goal of his own at 13:30, but Lang set up Sam Ftorek for a shorthanded marker with sweet give-and-go passing to beat David Cann and tie the game at 3-3 after 40 minutes.

In the third, Brian Passmore put home the rebound on Mason's point shot to push Augusta ahead by a goal at 2:09. Landolt responded with a five-on-three power play goal for Pensacola at 13:03, but Augusta managed to kill the remaining time left in a high sticking double minor to Joe Pereira and escape tied 4-4 with time winding down.

There, Mason would pick up a pass from Passmore and Anthony Battaglia off a cycle in the corner, wheeling the Ice Pilots net for a clean look at a shot from the slot that beat Cann blocker side for the game-winning goal. Despite late attempts to pull their goaltender, Pensacola was not able to set up in the Lynx zone and Augusta held on for the win.

Jason Wolfe turned in another stellar effort for his fourth straight victory, stopping 49 shots in the win. Cann took the loss with 23 saves. Augusta finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play while the Ice Pilots ended at 2-for-6.

The same two teams get back to action Tuesday night at 8 pm, with the Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show kicking off at 7:30 pm on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
