Stanley Cup is Coming Back to Columbia
February 21, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, SC (February 17, 2006) - The Columbia Inferno announce that the most famous trophy in professional sports, the Stanley Cup, will be on display at the Carolina Coliseum on Saturday, March 18th as the Inferno take on the Greenville Grrrowl at 7:30pm. The Cup was originally scheduled on December 10th but was not in attendance due to flight problems.
The 112-year old Stanley Cup has been touring the cities of 20 ECHL teams since October 26 and up through December 17 to help raise money for hurricane relief efforts. All proceeds will benefit charities assisting in hurricane relief efforts including, but not limited to, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and United Way. This tour is another addition to the National Hockey League's charitable efforts, which have included a joint donation with the NHL Players' Association of $1 million to Worldvision for Hurricane Katrina relief.
This trophy honors those who compete and succeed at the highest level and serves to mystify and intrigue both life-long hockey fans and new converts to the game with its etched chronicle of achievement and history.
The "Keeper of the Cup" from the Hockey Hall of Fame also will be available to answer questions and talk about the history of hockey. Fans will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with the Stanley Cup and make a monetary donation towards the hurricane relief.
The Inferno will play the South Carolina Stingrays tonight at 7:30pm and the Florida Everblades on Sunday, February 19th at 5:05pm. Tickets are available for this weekends games by calling 251-2222 or visiting the Carolina Coliseum Box Office.
