Lynx Use Special Teams to Tame Pride
February 19, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
The Augusta Lynx rode three power play goals and a shorthanded marker to a 5-2 win over the Florence Pride on Thursday night at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
Augusta opened the scoring with a power play marker by Todd Bennett at 3:44, with Scott Kelman and Martin Lapointe assisting on the goal. John Cronin would score a second goal later in the period, but it was disallowed because a second puck was spotted on the ice during the play in the Florence zone. Despite protests from the Lynx players and bench, the goal was taken back off the board and the period ended 1-0 in favor of Augusta.
In the second, the Lynx opened up a 3-0 lead on an unassisted power play marker by Scott Corbett and a shorthanded goal by Bennett with Cronin throwing a beautiful cross-ice pass to set up the goal at 11:23 of the middle frame. Florence would come back, however, when Vladimir Gusev scored at 12:08 with the man advantage, followed by Allan Sirois' power play goal at 14:11 to make it a 3-2 game after two periods of play.
Augusta would regain control of the game at 2:23 when Matt Dzieduszycki scored a power play goal from Jonathan Gagnon and Louis Goulet to make it 4-2, followed by a Gagnon marker at 10:34 that just missed being a power play goal by one second. Jarrett Thompson set Gagnon up on the back door with a beautiful cross-crease pass, while Lapointe added his second helper of the evening for a 5-2 final. Gregg Naumenko made 28 saves to earn his seventh win of the season, while Sebastien Laplante stopped 26 shots for the loss, just his third in 11 starts for the Pride.
