Lynx Open Season At Home, Win Big Saturday
October 20, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
It was either feast or famine for the Augusta Lynx this weekend, as they opened the 2003-04 Season with a pair of games at home Friday and Saturday against the Florida Everblades.
Friday's opening night saw 4,000+ check out a revamped Lynx lineup against the Everblades, but fail to score. In fact, neither team was able to put points on the board until five minutes left in regulation, when the Everblades broke through for a power play goal by Brian McCullough. Brent McDonald sealed the game at 18:35 with a goal of his own to give the Everblades a 2-0 win. Jason Saal stopped 27 of 29 shots in the loss for the Lynx.
Saturday night was a different story for Augusta. Looking to right their inability to score from Friday, they jumped on the board just 24 seconds into the game. Scott Kelman made it 1-0 from Matt Dzieduszycki and Greg Jacina to open things up, and at 4:34 Jack Baker scored his first goal as a Lynx to make it a two goal game. Florida would bounce back with a shorthanded goal and a power play marker before the end of the first, however, and the game was tied at 2-2 after one period of play.
In the second period, the Lynx would be the only team to mark when Jacina crashed the Everblades cage for his first of the season at 6:01. No further scoring occurred in the period, thanks in large part to spectacular goaltending from Saal. At one point, the Lynx netminder rolled over onto his back, throwing his stick behind his head on the ice and stopping a shot from point blank range. Thus the stage was set for a third period that defied prediction.
Augusta opened up a 4-2 lead on Louis Goulet's goal at 3:12, but Keith Anderson netted a pair of goals to pull the Everblades even at four. Scott Corbett notched his third point of the night and first goal at 9:51 to push the Lynx back ahead, and Jonathan Gagnon made it 6-4 at 11:13 from Rob Stanfield and Shawn Weiman, a goal that proved to be the eventual game winner. Brian McCullough came back to make it 6-5, but late goals by Todd Bennett on the power play at 17:01, and Dzieduszycki at 17:58 wrapped up an 8-5 win for Augusta. Each team had 38 shots during the game, and Saal earned his first win with a 33 save performance.

Player Of The Week
Scott Corbett's one goal, three assist performance Saturday night earned him this week's Player of the Week nod from the Lynx. With his parents in attendance both nights of opening weekend, Corbett really stepped up his game Saturday night in leading the Lynx to an 8-5 win over the Florida Everblades. He also finished the weekend with a +1 rating.
