Gulls Off To Good Start With Opening Night Win

October 20, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls only had a handful of practices to work with during training camp. They had no preseason games, which worried head coach Steve Martinson before Saturday's season opener in Bakersfield. With San Diego's big 1-0 win, he's resting a little bit easier this week.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

After two weeks of practices, practices and more practices, it was time to officially drop the puck on the regular season... and not a moment too soon for the Blue and Orange. First up... the Bakersfield Condors, a team the Gulls owned in the West Coast Hockey League.

Oct. 18 @ Bakersfield:

The Condors, who were shutout the previous night by Fresno, were obviously looking to jump out to a quick start, but the Gulls would have none of it. San Diego's defense stood strong all game long and in net Trevor Koenig was well... Trevor Koenig. The all-star netminder stopped all 27 shots against him, including some big ones down the stretch en route to earning his 100th win and 15th shutout in a Gulls uniform.

Offensively, it took a while for the Gulls to get going. They started building momentum late in the second period and Mike Garrow finally lit the lamp 4:05 into the third. That would prove to be the lone scoring as both teams, especially Bakersfield in the waning moments, were shut down.

THIS WEEK:

The Gulls play the Condors in Bakersfield again Friday for their only game of the week. Game time from Centennial Garden is scheduled for 7 p.m. with Chris Ello calling all the action on AM1360 KPOP.

TEAM NOTES:

San Diego is now 7-2-0 all-time in season openers... In their first road game of the season, the Gulls are 4-4-1... The Gulls were 75-15-5, including an 18-4 mark, against Bakersfield in WCHL play. The two Pacific Division rivals will meet nine more times this season...

PLAYER NOTES:

Koenig's lifetime record with the Gulls is now 100-39-11. He is the all-time franchise leader in shutouts (15) goals-against average (2.38) and save percentage (.916)... Of the 20 players on the Gulls' roster, nine started the season in American Hockey League training camps: Greg Barber (Providence), David Burleigh (Cincinnati), George Davis (Cincinnati), Miguel Delisle (Cincinnati), Sylvain Deschatelets (Hershey), Garrow (Cincinnati), Josh Gratton (Cincinnati), Cliff Loya (Cincinnati) and Sandro Sbrocca (Cincinnati)... Four of those players also participated in NHL training camps: Barber (Boston), Davis (Anaheim), Loya (Anaheim) and Sbrocca (Anaheim)...

TRANSACTIONS:

Veteran right-winger Dennis Purdie (sinus infection) and rookie right-winger Davis (back spasms) both begin the season on the seven-day injured reserve list...
