The Fresno Falcons were in town for Opening Night, and just like last season, a shutout was seen at the Garden. However, this year it was the Falcons shutting down the Condors offense 3-0. Kris Porter scored twice, including a tally with just over a minute remaining in the game, and Drew Schoneck notched a power play tally in the effort. Rookie goaltender Nolan Schaefer, from Providence College, earned the shutout by turning aside 23 Condors shots. Bakersfield outshot the Falcons 23-20.

Saturday, October 18th

Offense was hard to come by again on Saturday night, as San Diego won 1-0 at Centennial Garden. This time, Trevor Koenig notched the win by turning aside 27 Condors shots, 16 in the third period. D Mike Garrow scored just 4:05 into the final frame to break the scoreless tie and ruin Bakersfield's night. The Condors allowed just 21 shots on goal in suffering the loss, despite outshooting their opponent for the second straight night..

This week

The Condors head out for their first road game of the season on Tuesday night, from the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The Wranglers are in their first season, and went 1-1-1 during the opening weekend in Idaho. Game time is 7:05pm and can be heard on KGEO AM 1230.

The team returns home for a pair of games this weekend, starting on Friday night with the Gulls again. Everyone in attendance at this game will receive a set of Condors Thunderstix, courtesy of KGET-TV 17, KRAB Radio and American Business Machines.

On Saturday night, the Idaho Steelheads come into town for Ken Baker Book Signing Night, sponsored by KBID 1350. The author and goalie will be in town signing copies of his book, "They Don't Play Hockey In Heaven," which is based on his 2001-02 season with the Condors. Game time for both matches is 7:00pm, with the Garden doors opening at 6:00pm.

The Condors Coach's Show can be heard on KGEO AM 1230 each and every Thursday, live from the Holiday Inn Select next to Centennial Garden from 6:00-7:00pm. This week's guests include D's Jonas Lennartsson and Darren Shakotko, as well as the regular visit from Head Coach Paul Kelly.

Individual seats are on sale now, and may be purchased through the Centennial Garden box office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Friday. Tickets may also be purchased by phone through at 322-2525, online at www.ticketmaster.com or at any Ticketmaster location.

Notes from the Nest

· The Condors have opened a season winless in two games twice in team history. In 2001-02, the club started 0-1-1 and in 1998-99 they had a record of 0-2 before winning their first match. The team's record for best start came the very next season, in 1999-00, when they started 11-0.

· Both netminders have earned one start this season. Peter Hirsch started on Friday night, stopping 17 of 20 shots, and Joe Watkins started on Saturday night, turning aside 20 of 21.

· The Condors power play has struggled, amassing just six shots on 11 power play opportunities and no goals.

Quote of the Week

"We'll score some goals. I'm sure people will say 'oh, no goals scored' but they will come." Condors Head Coach Paul Kelly, quoted in the Bakersfield Californian, after his team was shutout for the second straight night, 1-0 by San Diego on Friday.
