Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (Nov. 26th) - Behind a relentless offensive attack and timely scoring, Wichita (6-6-1-2) recorded two third-period goals en route to a 2-0 win over Quad City (7-4-2-2) on Wednesday night at INTRUST Bank Arena. The Thunder limited the Mallards to just seven shots through the first two frames while finally breaking through with goals from Erick Lizon and Ian Lowe in the third. Wichita improves to 1-0-0-0 in the first of 12 meetings between the two teams this season.
The story through the first two periods was the goaltending battle between Tyler Bunz and Evan Mosher. Wichita out-chanced the Mallards in the first 20 minutes, but couldn't get one past the rookie netminder. Bunz only faced 12 shots total in the game, but made two key saves down the stretch including one on Kevin Baker from in-close with under two minutes left to preserve the goose egg on the board.
At 7:18 of the third, Erick Lizon broke the scoreless tie after a loose puck came to him on the right wing boards. As he approached the net on a two-on-one, the defender shaded to Ian Lowe, allowing Lizon a free pass to Mosher and he roofed it from within a foot of the net to make it 1-0. The Mallards pulled their netminder while being shorthanded in the final minute of the game to even it at five-on-five on the ice. After RG Flath hit the side of the goal from between the benches, Quad City got to a loose puck behind their cage. However, Lowe knocked a clearing attempt out of the air and rolled it over the line to increase the lead to 2-0 with just six seconds remaining.
Thunder netminders have three shutouts this season as Bunz blanked the Missouri Mavericks last Saturday by the final of 6-0. He has two shutouts in the last five days and his third of his pro career. The win pushes Wichita's home streak to three-in-a row at INTRUST Bank Arena. Wichita hit the 30-shot plateau with 35 tonight and extends the streak to nine games in a row. Flath recorded an assist and now has 149 total, putting him at 289 points for his career. The loss for Quad City is their first road defeat in regulation this season and snaps a nine-game regulation win-streak. Bunz claims his third win of the season, stopping all 12 shots he faced. Mosher took his second loss of the year, stopping 33 of 34 shots he faced.
Wichita went 1-for-2 on the power play. Quad City was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Wichita heads to Missouri on Friday night to start a three-in-three over the weekend. The Thunder returns home on Saturday night to host the Allen Americans at 7:05 p.m. Come join us as Marvel's Spider-Man swings into the Air Capital this Saturday.
