Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles (9-5-0-0) fell to the Ontario Reign (10-6-0-2), 4-3, despite a strong comeback attempt on Wednesday evening at the Budweiser Events Center.
Ontario forward Ralfs Freibergs netted the first tally of the game on a shot from the top of the left circle beating Eagles goalie Doug Carr to give the Reign an early lead with 6:34 remaining in the first period. Not but 2:18 later, Reign defenseman Matt Register's slapshot from the point found its way underneath Carr to give Ontario a 2-0 lead. With 45 seconds left in the first, Eagles forward Brock Nixon flew down the left wing and fired a slapshot from the faceoff dot beating Reign goaltender Jussi Olkinuora underneath his blocker, cutting Ontario's lead in half, 2-1.
Three minutes and twenty one seconds into the second period, Reign defenseman Jeff May scored on a rebound attempt on a 5-on-3 power play to give the Reign a 2 goal lead again, 3-1. Forty-three seconds later, Eagles defenseman Curtis Gedig accelerated down the left boards and pounded the puck past Olkinuora for a shorthanded goal drawing the Eagles back to within one, 3-2. With 9:38 left in the second period, Nixon was brought down on a breakaway, and capitalized on a penalty shot after deking once, scoring under Olkinuora's blocker to bring the game to a 3-3 tie. Register answered the Eagles rally with a goal of his own, patiently maneuvering through the slot and squeaking one underneath Carr to give the Reign a 4-3 advantage with 5:46 remaining in the second. After a scoreless third period, the Eagles fell by a final score of 4-3 in spite of Carr's 27 saves.
