Wheeling, WV - The Greenville Road Warriors (10-8-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, did their best to claw back from a three-goal deficit, but fell short on Wednesday as the Wheeling Nailers (8-6-0-0) took a 4-2 decision at the WesBanco Arena.
The Nailers wasted no time in grabbing the game's first goal as David Gilbert scored his fifth of the season just 34 seconds in. From the right side, Gilbert grabbed the puck and fired a shot from the circle that beat Jeff Malcolm glove side.
Greenville received a golden chance to even the game at 8:15 of the opening frame when Chaz Johnson levied a dangerous hit on Scott Arnold in front of the Nailers bench. The hit earned Johnson a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct, but the Warriors failed to score on the ensuring power play.
Wheeling extended its lead at 14:02 of the first when Bobby Shea recorded his first goal of the season on a power play. With Tyler Brown in the box for hooking, Zach Torquato ripped a shot on target that was knocked down by Malcolm, but the rebound dropped right to Shea who capitalized on the second chance.
Sahir Gill made it 3-0 with another power play goal at 13:44 of the second period. During a 5-on-3 attack, Gill secured the puck in the left circle and wristed a shot past Malcolm's blocker for his third tally of the season.
The Road Warriors answered for the first time at 16:52 of the middle frame when Paul Rodrigues tipped Charles Roussel's slap shot from the left point for his second goal in the last three games. Just 3:40 into the third, Emerson Clark cut the deficit to one when Spencer Humphries hit him in stride behind the Nailers' defense for a breakaway goal and Clark's fifth tally of the season.
Still down by one, the Road Warriors pulled Malcolm for the extra attacker with 1:12 remaining in the third but were unable to even the game despite numerous chances. Instead, Torquato notched an empty netter with just 15 seconds left for the 4-2 final.
The Road Warriors went 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill. Malcolm (8-4-0) made 22 saves and suffered the loss, while Franky Palazzese (6-5-0) stopped 18 shots for the win.
Wheeling outshot Greenville 26-20.
