Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers brought plenty of emotion into their Thanksgiving Eve tilt with the Greenville Road Warriors on Wednesday night, and it led to two points in the standings. Zack Torquato and Sahir Gill both put three points on the board, and the Nailers never trailed, defeating the Road Warriors 4-2 at WesBanco Arena.
The Nailers had a splendid first period, as they scored a pair of goals, while killing 6:33 of Greenville power play time. The first Wheeling marker came just 36 seconds in, as the home team won the race on a hybrid icing call. David Gilbert scooped up a loose puck on the right wing wall, skated into the circle, and slipped a shot in along the ice. After successfully killing off a five-minute major, the Nailers added to their lead with a power play goal. Zack Torquato wheeled his way through the left circle, leaving off the puck for Bobby Shea, who flipped in his first goal in a Wheeling uniform.
With 6:16 remaining in the middle frame, the Nailers added onto their lead, courtesy of their second power play goal of the contest. Zack Torquato dished the puck to Sahir Gill at the top of the left circle. Gill glided to the dot, before rifling a slap shot through Jeff Malcolm's legs for a 3-0 advantage. Greenville got one goal back before intermission, as Paul Rodrigues redirected in Charles-Olivier Roussel's shot from the top of the left circle with 3:08 remaining.
The Road Warriors continued to attempt a comeback in the third period, as a breakaway goal by Emerson Clark at the 3:40 mark cut the Wheeling lead to one. However, with 15 seconds remaining, Zack Torquato put the finishing touches on the victory for the Nailers, as he tapped in an empty net goal, giving himself and Sahir Gill three-point nights. Wheeling improved to 5-1-0 at home with the 4-2 triumph.
Franky Palazzese was the winning goaltender for the home team, denying 18 of the 20 shots he faced. Jeff Malcolm took the loss for Greenville, making 22 saves on 25 shots.
The Nailers will continue their five-game homestand on Friday night at 7:35, when they play the first of back-to-back games against the Florida Everblades.
