Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - For the third straight day, the Memphis Redbirds rallied back from behind to win. This time, the 'Birds eliminated a 3-2 deficit to take down the Louisville Bats (Triple-A affiliate, Cincinnati Reds), 4-3, on a warm and sunny night at AutoZone Park.
The Redbirds (7-9) brought the big stick out early, as Lars Nootbaar smacked a no-doubt, two-run home run in the bottom of the third to propel Memphis to an early 2-0 lead. Nootbaar has hits in seven of his last nine games, including two home runs and four extra-base hits.
After that, the Bats (4-11) slowly crept ahead, scoring a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to briefly take a 3-2 lead. The advantage, however, was short-lived. The 'Birds went right back in front in the bottom of the sixth - John Nogowski crushed a moonshot home run deep into the Bluff City night, giving Memphis a 4-3 lead it would never give up.
Johan Oviedo started for the Redbirds and pitched well, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits in 5.1 innings pitched. The 23-year-old began his outing superbly, retiring the first 10 batters he faced.
After Oviedo left the game, the 'Birds bullpen shut the door. Austin Warner, Jesús Cruz, and Junior Fernández combined to pitch 3.2 scoreless and hitless frames, striking out five and walking just one. Fernández closed the game out in the ninth via a 1-2-3 inning.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
