Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders never trailed as they defeated the Rochester Red Wings 6-3 on Friday night at Frontier Field.
The RailRiders used the long ball to take a 3-0 lead over the Red Wings in the top of the first. Three batters into the game, Rob Brantly connected on a two-run homer to give the RailRiders the lead, and Armando Alvarez added a solo shot later in the frame off Steven Fuentes (0-2).
Alvarez finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and a walk. He now owns a seven-game hitting streak, the longest by a RailRiders batter this season.
After Rochester answered with a run off Mike Montgomery in the bottom of the second, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tallied a run without a hit in the third to take a 4-1 lead. However, Rafael Bautista led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-2.
Montgomery (1-2) turned in his best start of the season, striking out a season-high eight batters and allowing just two runs on three hits and walking two in 5.0 innings of work. The left-hander retired nine out of the final 10 batters he faced.
In the top of the seventh, a two-run double from Cristian Perez padded SWB's lead to 6-2. Perez finished the game 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBIs and has a hit in four out of his five games played since being called up from High-A Hudson Valley.
Rochester pushed across a run against Nick Nelson in the bottom of the eighth. After loading the bases with no outs, the Red Wings got a sacrifice fly from Yasmany Tomas before Nelson struck out the next two to limit the damage.
Luis Garcia turned in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure his fifth save of the season in as many chances.
POSTGAME NOTES: Zack Zehner finished 0-for-5 and saw his five-game on-base streak come to an end... The RailRiders drew 10 walks in the game, tying a season high (5/14 vs. Lehigh Valley).
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues its six-game series at the Rochester on Saturday evening. The RailRiders send RHP Deivi Garcia (1-0, 3.00) to the mound, while the Red Wings counter with RHP Tyler Eppler (0-1, 4.97). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m., with coverage on the RailRiders Baseball Network beginning at 4:45 p.m.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre returns home to PNC Field on Tuesday, May 25 with a date against the Buffalo Bisons. For tickets and more information, call (570) 969-BALL or slide to www.swbrailriders.com/tickets.
