Late Rally Pushes Crunch Past Phantoms

April 2, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release

Glens Falls, NY - Kevin Lalande stopped a season-high 42 shots and Chad Kolarik tallied two points (1g, 1a), including the game-winner with 2:19 left in regulation to lift the Syracuse Crunch to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Adirondack Phantoms tonight at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Adirondack controlled the first period and would have tallied the game's first goal in the if not for the goaltending of Lalande, who turned away all 18 Phantoms shots he faced in the frame.

Adirondack finally did break through on Lalande at the 6:37 mark of the first when Patrick Maroon labeled a wrister to the top corner on the power play to make it 1-0.

The Adirondack lead did not last long, however, as the Crunch answered back just four minutes later. Charlie Kronschnabel's persistence paid off by pursuing the puck, keeping it in the offensive zone and shuffling a backhand on goal from the slot. Rookie John Kurtz found the rebound and stuffed it past Michael-Lee Teslak for his first professional goal to knot the score at 1-1.

The Crunch took their first lead of the game just 13 seconds into the third period when Kolarik led a rush down the ice, fired a shot on net and Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman got to the rebound and punched it past Teslak to make it 2-1.

Adirondack tied the game for the second time just under three minutes later with another power play goal. Jon Matsumoto potted his 29th of the season after he slid home a loose puck from the top of the crease past Lalande to make it 2-2

The Phantoms carried the momentum from that point on, but the Crunch and Lalande withstood a 19-shot barrage and a host of scoring chances the rest of the way, including a one-minute, 36 second 5-on-3 advantage with less than five minutes to go in regulation.

That penalty kill sparked the Crunch and led to the game-winning goal. Tyler Murovich led a rush up the ice and put a shot on net that popped up in the air. Kolarik, following up on the play, batted the disk out of mid-air past Teslak for the late 3-2 advantage.

Adirondack pulled Teslak for the extra-attacker, but Lalande shut the door in the game's final two minutes.
