April 2, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Houston Aeros News Release
HOUSTON - G Darcy Kuemper (1-0-0) made 23 saves in his first career AHL start to lead the Houston Aeros (31-32-7-5) to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Wolves (47-22-1-6) in front of 9,575 at Toyota Center Friday night. C Andy Hilbert (1-1=2) and D Ryan Gunderson (0-2=2) each recorded two points in the contest while Wolves G Peter Mannino (24-4-1) took the loss saving 26 of 30 shots faced.
The Aeros had scored just six goals against Chicago this season entering Friday's game, but managed to find the net twice in the opening frame. RW J-M Daoust centered to Hilbert in the slot who sent a wrister to the twine for his sixth of the season 10:42 into the period. C Chad Rau tallied his 17th of the campaign to give Houston a 2-0 advantage at the 13:04 mark after taking a rebound bid top shelf to beat Mannino.
The Wolves cut the lead in half outscoring Houston 2-1 in the second period. C Johnny Pohl deflected home a feed from D Arturs Kulda at 4:05. The Aeros answered off a one-timer from D Jamie Fraser at 7:47, but Chicago retaliated when Pohl tallied his second marker of the night at the 16:01 mark.
LW Colton Gillies put the Aeros back up a deuce 2:06 into the third period. Mannino left the crease to retrieve the puck from behind the cage, but RW Duncan Milroy beat the Wolves goalie to the punch. Milroy batted the puck to a wide open Gillies in front who buried it for goal number seven of the season. Chicago tacked on a late marker at 19:41 off the stick of C Riley Holzapfel with Mannino on the bench in favor of the extra attacker.
The Aeros outshot Chicago 30-26 and neither team scored on six respective power play opportunities. The win is Houston's first over the Wolves this season as they close out the season series 1-6-0-1 in the 110th meeting between the two squads.
