Adirondack Phantoms News Release

GLENS FALLS, NY - Rookie defenseman Erik Gustafsson assisted on both goals in his professional debut, but the Adirondack Phantoms fell to the Syracuse Crunch 3-2 Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

The Phantoms came out with a lot of defensive energy and held the Crunch for almost the entire first period. Syracuse finally put a puck on goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak with 5.4 seconds left in the frame, but in spite of out-shooting the Crunch 18-1, Adirondack could not put anything by goalie Kevin Lalande, who was outstanding.

Patrick Maroon put the Phantoms on the board in the second period, as he fired his shot off the shoulder of Lalande and into the net at 6:37, assisted by Jon Matsumoto and Erik Gustafsson. A native of Kvissleby, Sweden, making his professional debut out of Northern Michigan University, the assist was Gustafsson's first career pro and AHL point. The Crunch answered back at 10:31 as rookie John Kurtz tipped in a shot from Charlie Kronschnabel to tie the game at 1-1; it was Kurtz's first career pro goal.

13 seconds into third period Syracuse had a 2-1 lead as Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman swept a rebound from a Chad Kolarik shot into an open net, catching the Phantoms completely off guard. However, Adirondack rallied quickly as Matsumoto scored his team-leading 29th goal of the year at 3:01, knocking in a power play goal from Maroon and Gustafsson. The Phantoms had a glorious chance to retake the lead with five minutes remaining when two Syracuse penalties gave the hosts a five-on-three power play for just over a minute and a half. Yet even though Adirondack maintained possession for most of the advantage, they could not get the puck past Lalande. Then shortly after their stubborn penalty kill ended, Syracuse nabbed the game winner as Kolarik used his stick to swat a waist-high puck into the net at 17:41, giving the Crunch a 3-2 lead. Adirondack pulled Teslak for the final 35 seconds of play, but could not score the tying goal.

Kevin Lalande turned in an impressive performance by stopping 44-of-46 shots for his 24th win of the season, helping Syracuse improve to 32-38-3-3. Michael-Lee Teslak finished with 16 saves on 19 shots in goal for Adirondack, who fell to 32-38-3-4. The Phantoms out-shot the Crunch 46-19 and went 2-for-8 on the power play; Syracuse was 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.

The Phantoms will travel down to the Times Union Center on Saturday, April 3rd as they battle the Albany River Rats at 7:00 pm for Round 11 of the Time Warner Cable Cup series. Adirondack's next home game will come on Wednesday, April 7th as they host the Binghamton Senators for a 7:00 pm face off at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
