Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - All the Binghamton Senators have to do is keep on winning and they will keep their playoff hopes alive. The Penguins are ahead of Binghamton in the standings, but tonight it didn't look like that at all. Binghamton put forth their strongest effort of the year in a 6-2 victory.
The scoring began just 2:08 into the first period as Penguins defenseman, Deryk Engelland's wrist shot from the blue line found the back of the B-Sens' net. Eric Tangradi and Joe Vitale were there to help and pick up the assists.
The B-Sens rallied just two minutes later on the power play. Kaspars Daugavins tapped in a perfect pass from Martin St. Pierre for 18th goal of the season, tying it up 1-1. Derek Smith also earned an assist.
Daugavins picked up his second goal of the night to make it 2-1 at 10:06 of the period. Josh Hennessy dumped the puck to the front of the, hitting a Penguin before bouncing right onto the stick of Daugavins. Geoff Kinrade would also be credited with an assist.
Wilkes-Barre battled back at 14:10 of the first to tie the score at two apiece. Dustin Jeffrey took advantage of a giveaway by defensemen Craig Schira in the B-Sens zone. Jeffrey was able to skate right in on goal and back hand it past goaltender Mike Brodeur.
At the 7:38 mark of the second period Jim O'Brien was able to go top shelf to score the eventual game winning goal, making the score 3-2. O'Brien beat the Penguins defenseman to a loose puck and was able to deke out the Pens' net minder Brad Thiessen on the play. Ryan Keller picked up an assist while Kinrade earned his second helper of the night.
The B-Sens would then add three additional, unanswered goals.
At 16:29 of the second, while shorthanded, Derek Smith skated end to end and scored his 12th goal of the season to put the Senators up by two.
Midway through the third period, Cheechoo beat Thiessen top shelf with St. Pierre and Zack Smith picking up the helpers.
At 12:58 Hennessy scored his 30th goal of the season, short handed on a breakaway, making the score 6-2 which is how the game would end. Shots were in favor of the Penguins 37-26, but Mike Brodeur had a strong showing in goal making 35 saves to help earn his team the two points.
The B-Sens return to action Saturday, April 3 as they host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating.
