Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that LHP Cody Funderburk joins the Kernels from Elizabethton; Alex Schick has been activated from the restricted list; Luis Rijo has been placed on the 7-day IL, retroactive to May 25, with a left hamstring strain; and Blayne Enlow has been promoted to Fort Myers. Brian Maloney, Senior Manager of Minor League Operations, announced the moves.
The Twins selected Funderburk in the 15th round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Dallas Baptist University. He pitched in 10 games at Elizabethton, posting a 2-1 record and 4.93 ERA. In 34.2 IP, he allowed 45 hits and 20 runs (19 earned) with 15 walks and 32 strikeouts.
Schick has not pitched since the 2017 season when he made two starts for the Kernels. He missed the entire 2018 season recovering from surgery on his right elbow. He was selected by the Twins in the 6th round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of the University of California-Berkeley.
Rijo has made seven starts for the Kernels this year, posting a 1-4 record and 3.47 ERA. In 36.1 IP, he's allowed 36 hits and 24 runs (14 earned) with 14 walks and 30 strikeouts. He was acquired by the Twins as part of the trade with the Yankees in 2018 for Lance Lynn.
Enlow made eight starts for the Kernels this season, posting a 4-3 record and 4.57 ERA. In 41.1 IP, he allowed 42 hits and 24 runs (21 earned) with 15 walks and 44 strikeouts. He was selected by the Twins in the third round of the 2017 First Year Player Draft out of St. Amant (LA) HS.
Funderburk and Schick are active and available for today's 12:05 PM game with Peoria. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster remains at the MWL maximum of 25 active players with three players on the injured list.
The Kernels wrap up an eight-game home stand this afternoon at 12:05 PM vs. Peoria. They will be on the road, May 28 - June 10, returning to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, June 11th.
