South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: For the second straight night from Four Winds Field, the West Michigan Whitecaps mounted a comeback against the South Bend Cubs after being down by a large deficit earlier in the game. After the Cubs jumped out to a comfortable 5-1 lead, West Michigan got it back to a 5-4 game in the 6th inning.

After winning the first two games of this series, the Cubs had the chance to win their fifth series in six tries. With that quick 5-1 lead, the club did not expect the three hour and fifty-one-minute game. However, things ended in the most positive way possible for Buddy Bailey's crew.

The Whitecaps continued their rally in the top of the 8th and plated two runs to tie the game at 6-6. The Cubs went to extras for the first time this season at home.

West Michigan made an immediate impact by scoring three runs in their half of the 10th. A key error made by third baseman Chris Morel brought in the 9th run for West Michigan. For Morel, a key at-bat was in his future after the error.

After scoring one run to bring the score to 9-7 Whitecaps in the bottom of the 10th, newcomer Gustavo Polanco was down to his last strike with two outs. Brennen Davis singled down the right field line earlier in the inning and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. On the two-strike pitch, Polanco drove a ball in the air into deep left field and homered in his first Four Winds Field at-bat to tie the game at 9-9.

The game continued into the late night in Downtown South Bend and the Whitecaps came up again in the top of the 11th. With Avery Tuck automatically starting at second base with the extra inning rules, he went to third base on a Jordan Pearce single. West Michigan RBI leader Ulrich Bojarski hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Tuck to make it an 10-9 game.

Again, the Cubs came up trailing in the bottom of the 11th. With the crowd buzzing and sticking around with Memorial Day tomorrow, there was extra life in the ballpark on Sunday night.

Delvin Zinn began the 11th automatically on second base. After Andy Weber walked, Jonathan Sierra blooped a ball into shallow center field that dropped for base hit, scoring Zinn. 10-10.

With runners at first and second, the next batter was Tyler Durna, who also drew a walk. Morel came back up looking for redemption. On a belt high fastball from Angel Reyes, Morel did not miss his pitch and hit a dart down the left field line to win the game for the Cubs 11-10. Morel was immediately mobbed by his teammates and the celebration began.

With the win, the Cubs are now 27-21 on the season and will go for the sweep over West Michigan tomorrow afternoon on Memorial Day at 2:05 p.m. Cam Sanders will be on the mound for South Bend in the series finale.
