July 14, 2023 - International League (IL)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(ALLENTOWN, PA) -- The Charlotte Knights dropped the opening game of a three-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 8-0 on Friday night from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. Friday's game was the first one of the week for all International League teams after a four-day break from Monday to Thursday.
Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada began his major league rehab assignment with the Knights on Friday and recorded one of Charlotte's six hits in the game. Moncada, who is currently on Chicago's 10-day injured list, singled in the first inning of Friday's opener.
The IronPigs scored twice in the second inning and later followed that up with a big six-run fourth inning. Second baseman Jim Haley and first baseman Nick Podkul both homered in the sixth for the 'Pigs. The home run for Haley was a solo shot, while the home run from Podkul was a three-run blast.
Charlotte LHP Garrett Davila (2-5, 6.12) was charged with the loss after he started the opener on Friday and allowed eight runs (seven earned) over four innings. In relief of Davila, four Charlotte pitchers held the IronPigs scoreless over the final four innings.
For Lehigh Valley, RHP Nick Nelson (2-1, 3.73) started and earned the win on Friday night. He allowed just four hits over six shutout frames. He also fanned five batters.
The Knights will continue the three-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) on Saturday night. The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action on www.CharlotteKnights.com from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. on Saturday.
