Iowa Cubs News Release

COLUMBUS, OH - The Iowa Cubs (51-35) recorded 10 hits to beat the Columbus Clippers (39-47) by a score of 7-3 in the series opener, Friday at Huntington Park.

Iowa jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, getting three consecutive doubles including a two-run two-bagger by Edwin Ríos. Already up 2-0, Dom Nunez clubbed a solo home run in the second inning, growing Iowa's lead to 3-0.

The Clippers cut the deficit to one in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Jhonkensy Noel, his 16th of the year. Luckily for Iowa, that was as close as it would get, as they padded their lead in the top of the fifth.

A bases loaded single from Alexander Canario followed by a two-run double from Jake Slaughter and a sacrifice fly by Bryce Windham grew their lead to 7-2. Columbus got a run of their own back in the fifth on a bases loaded walk by Noel, but that is all they would score against starter Caleb Kilian.

Kilian came an out shy of recording his seventh win of the year, allowing three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out a season-high seven batters over his 4.2 innings. He was followed by Riley Martin, Rowan Wick, Brendon Little and Manuel Rodriguez, who kept Columbus at three.

The four relievers combined to allow just three hits while striking out 10, keeping Iowa's lead intact, earning them the victory.

POSTGAME NOTES:

In his first game back with Iowa since injuring his shoulder and ankle in the Dominican Winter League, Alexander Canario went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in. The outfielder was one of three I-Cubs hitters to record a multi-hit game.

Iowa's pitching staff combined for a season-high 17 strikeouts, with each pitcher recording at least two. Their previous high was 16 set back on June 14 against Indianapolis.

Iowa and Columbus will play game two of their three-game series tomorrow night, with first pitch from Huntington Park is set for 6:05 p.m. CT.
