Durham Bulls News Release

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bulls third baseman Curtis Mead recorded a career-high five hits in five at-bats, including two doubles, center fielder Greg Jones homered and left fielder Ruben Cardenas clubbed a two-run triple as part of a five-run ninth inning in Durham's 8-5 victory over the St. Paul Saints on Friday night at CHS Field.

Entering the top of the ninth down by two, Jones started the five-run rally with an opposite-field solo shot to left. 1B Austin Shenton in his Triple-A debut would then drive in the tying and go-ahead runs before Cardenas capped the big inning with his two-run triple.

The Bulls got on the board first with a three-run second, started by DH Niko Hulsizer's run-scoring triple. Jones would then beat out an infield single to score Hulsizer before coming plateward on Mead's RBI single to center. The Saints then answered with a pair of tallies in the second, before tying the game with a run in the third and grabbing the lead in the fourth with another score. That 4-3 margin would then be extended to two with another run in the seventh, a lead that would hold until the ninth.

Mead (5-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI) recorded a career-high with his five knocks, becoming the first Bulls player to record a five-hit game since Christian Arroyo on May 28, 2019. 2B Osleivis Basabe (3-5, 1 R) added three knocks of his own, with Jones (2-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and Hulsizer (2-5, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI) adding multi-hit efforts as well.

Durham reliever Hector Perez (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) earned the victory with his two shutout innings. Saints righty Patrick Murphy (1.0 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO), meanwhile, suffered the defeat.

The two teams are set to continue their three-game series on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 8:07pm ET. RHP Anthony Molina is anticipated to get the nod for the Bulls and is slated to be opposed by LHP Brent Headrick (3-1, 4.05).

Following their nine-game road trip, Durham returns home on Tuesday, July 25 for a six-game homestand versus the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6:35pm. Tickets for that game and all 2023 Durham Bulls home games are available, and can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com, or by calling 919.956.BULL.
