Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings didn't get the start they wanted to their three-game home stand, as the K-Wings drop a 3-1 decision to the Gwinnett Gladiators on Military Appreciation Night.
Capitalizing on power-play, Kory Karlander earned his team-lead tying sixth goal of the season on a wrister from the left circle 12:32 into the opening period. The goal not only energized the largest Wings Stadium crowd of the season (4,914), but it also extended Karlander's season opening point streak to 10 games.
Just over a minute later, former K-Wing, Will Colbert (1st) evened the contest at 1-1, knocking in a rebound off of an initial save from Ryan Nie.
Gwinnett continued to feel at home in the second period, as Pat Galivan (1st) gave the Gladiators the one-goal advantage by toe-dragging past a K-Wings defenseman and lifting the puck past Nie. Like Colbert, who registered his second point on the night with an assist, Galivan should feel comfortable playing in Kalamazoo. Galivan was a four-year standout for Western Michigan University from 2005-09.
Trying to tie the game in the third, a K-Wings turnover in the neutral zone created an empty-netter by Galivan to secure the victory for the Gladiators.
The Gladiators kept the K-Wings to 23 shots, which ties a season-low for Kalamazoo.
The loss by Kalamazoo snapped a four-game unbeaten in regulation streak (2-0-1-1) and a three-game home winning streak.
Saturday, November 13th (Kalamazoo 0-Toledo 8)
Kalamazoo, MI- Winless in their last five visits to Wings Stadium, which dates back to last season, the Toledo Walleye took their frustrations out against the Kalamazoo Wings by shutting out the K-Wings 8-0.
Scoring a league-low 19 goals on the season entering the game, the Walleye made amends by striking three times in the first period.
Kyle Page (1st) put Toledo on the board 3:37 into the period with a wrist shot from the blue line. The Walleye extended their lead later in the period with a wrap-around tally from Zack Torquato.
Three minutes after the Walleye's second goal, they added to their total. After receiving a pass, Andy Bohmbach (3rd) split the K-Wings defense and lifted the puck past Ryan Nie.
Toledo's scoring frenzy continued in the second period. With a two-on-one odd man rush, Peter Leblanc's (3rd) initial shot was stopped by Nie, but Leblanc was in perfect position to push in his rebound for his team-leading ninth point of the season.
On a penalty kill in the third period, Nie went behind his net to play the puck, the goaltender sent his pass off of Adam Keefe, who quickly gave it to Bohmbach for his second on the night.
Later in the period, Evan Rankin continued his strangle hold on Kalamazoo. The Portage, Michigan native scored on a deflection.
Sebastien Piche added to the Walleye's lead by tacking on Toledo's seventh goal on the night with a blue line wrister.
With less than a minute remaining, Rankin closed out the scoring with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, all of which have come against Kalamazoo.
Despite a furious scoring effort, the Walleye's top performer was Scott Campbell, who was stellar between the pipes stopping 34 shots to record his first professional shutout to improve his record to 3-2-1-1.
Sunday, November 14th (Kalamazoo 5-Wheeling 0)
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings snapped a three-game losing streak in grand style on Sunday, as the K-Wings shutout the Wheeling Nailers 5-0 at Wings Stadium.
Immediately after a K-Wings penalty ended their power-play and created a four-on-four, Wes O'Neill (2nd) stole the ensuing face-off and scored on a breakaway.
Spending over half of the period in the penalty box proved to be costly for the Nailers, as the K-Wings connected on two of their six power-play chances in the period. Standing just inside of the left circle, Andrew Fournier (2nd) rang his wrist shot off the crossbar and over the goal line to push the K-Wings lead to two goals.
A day after ending his league-high 10-game point streak, Kory Karlander started a new streak by scoring his team-leading seventh goal of the season on a five-on-three power-play.
Late in the period, Kalamazoo tacked on their fourth goal of the night, when Darryl Lloyd found Jon Landry in the slot for his third lamp-lighter of the season.
In the third period, while receiving a pass from Lloyd, Fournier (3rd) was able to spin towards the net and fired a shot past Patrick Killeen for this second goal of the night.
A night after allowing eight goals, Ryan Nie returned to form turning aside 22 shots to earn his first shutout of the season.
