Gwinnett Gladiators Weekly
November 15, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
On the Road Again: The Gladiators took three out of a possible four points at Kalamazoo and Cincinnati last weekend. Gwinnett plays three more games on the road next weekend before finally returning home November 23rd again South Carolina.
No Rest for the Weary: Starting this Friday, November 19th, Gwinnett will play seven games in just nine days.
League Leaders: Gwinnett (8-2-0-3) is tied for the league lead in points as of 11/15. In 13 games the Glads have 19 points, a total matched only by the Elmira Jackals (8-2-3-0).
Plenty of Promotions: Forwards Ryan Garbutt (Chicago) and Derek Nesbitt (Peoria) were promoted to the AHL last week. They were the two leading scorers for the Glads at the time of their promotion, with Nesbitt being named the ECHL Player of the Month in October and Garbutt being named the Player of the Week for Nov. 1st to the 7th. They were both tied for second in the league in points and Garbutt was tied for the league lead in goals with ten.
Welcome Back Pat: Forward Pat Galivan was assigned to Gwinnett from Chicago last week, and had a strong weekend debut with the Glads. Galivan scored two goals in Friday's 3-1 win over Kalamazoo, and added another goal and an assist Saturday against Cincinnati. He almost had the game winner in overtime as well against the Cyclones, but the puck apparently bounced off the crossbar and the post without crossing the goal line upon further review. Galivan had 42 points in 46 games in Gwinnett last season.
British Bully: Defenseman Dave Phillips was assigned to the Gladiators from Chicago after Nesbitt's promotion. The Beverley, England native had some punishing checks in his debut Saturday, along with an assist and a +1 rating.
"Special" Special Teams: After going a combined 2-for-8 on the powerplay over the weekend, the Glads are now second in the ECHL on the man advantage, converting 22.9% of their tries (16/70). The only team ahead of them, Idaho, sits at 24.3% (17/70). Gwinnett also has the fifth best penalty kill in the ECHL at 86.1% and leads the league in short-handed goals at five.
No Shots for You: The Gladiators allowed a season-low 23 shots to Kalamazoo Friday, only to follow that up by limiting Cincinnati to 16 shots on Saturday.
Strong Seconds: The Glads have outscored opponents 17-5 in the second period this season. When leading after two periods they are 7-0-0-0.
Shootout-age: Gwinnett dropped their third shootout of the season in their fourth try Saturday, going 0-for-5 against Marc Chevrie. Outside of an October 29th shootout win against Trenton the Glads are 0-for-13 in their shootout tries.
Last Week's Games:
November 12th, Gwinnett 3, Kalamazoo 1 - W
With the promotion of leading scorers Ryan Garbutt and Derek Nesbitt coming into Friday night's game in Kalamazoo, there were plenty of questions as to who would step up offensively for the Gladiators (8-2-2). Pat Galivan and Will Colbert were more than willing to provide an answer. Galivan scored twice, potting the game-winner and an empty netter in the third to help seal a 3-1 Gladiators win at Wings Stadium. It was the third win in a row for the Glads, as Colbert added a goal and an assist to help Gwinnet recover from a 1-0 deficit in the first.
November 13th, Gwinnett 3, Cincinnati 4 (SO - L)
The Gladiators squandered two third period leads in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones Saturday night at the US Bank Arena. After a scoreless first former Gladiator Scott Lehman put Cincy on top at the 11:01 mark in the second, beating Chris Carrozzi with a quick wrister. The Gladiators evened things up early in the third, as Pat Galivan and Mike Forney set up Andy Brandt on the powerplay at the 3:22 mark. Gwinnett took the lead a little over ten minutes later as Pat Galivan scored his third goal in the past two days with assists to Forney and Brandt to give the Glads their first lead on the man advantage. Cincinnati answered only 20 seconds later, as a Gladiator defensive zone turnover led to Dylan Hunter's third of the season to tie the game at two. At 16:19 Gwinnett again took the lead, as Dan Kissel fired a wrist shot under the glove of goaltender Marc Chevrie for a 3-2 Glads lead, assists to McKenzie and Phillips. Yet again, Cincinnati tied the game. With just 2:10 left Dustin Sproat scored his first goal of the season on a rebound in front to tie the game at 3-3. Chevrie shutdown Gwinnet in the shootout, while Barrett Ehgoetz managed to beat Chris Carrozzi to seal a 4-3 Cincy win. The Cyclones have now won four in a row after going winless in seven straight. Gwinnett had a three-game winning streak snapped.
