Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, announced today that outfielder Javier Herrera has been activated from the disabled list for tonight's game against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays). Currently on the road in Battle Creek, Michigan, Herrera and his fellow Cougars return home this Friday, September 2 to close out the regular season with a four-game set against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Recently nabbing Midwest League Post-Season All-Star honors, Herrera appeared in 88 games for Kane County before landing on the disabled list with a strained left wrist on August 18. In his time with the Cougars, the Venezuelan has produced 94 hits with a .278 batting average and 61 RBI. Once on base, Herrera has collected 26 stolen bases, holding the top slot among his teammates. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2001, Herrera emerged in the professional baseball arena that season in the Dominican Summer League (Rookie) and spent the following year in the Arizona Rookie League. Collecting three NWL Player of the Week (6/20-6/27, 7/19-7/25 & 8/16-8/22) and July Player of the Month honors with the Short-A squad in 2004, the league MVP slugged a .331 batting average with 12 home runs and 47 RBI.
Herrera fills a spot on the roster vacated by first baseman Tommy Everidge, who is inactive for two games.
The Cougars continue to pursue a playoff bid, playing two games in Battle Creek, Michigan before coming back to Geneva, Illinois this Friday, September 2 to host the Cedar Rapids Kernels, currently one game behind Kane County, in a critical four-game set over the holiday weekend. The final four features three fireworks shows (Friday - Sunday), visits from WUSN US99 Morning Show host "Big John" Howell on behalf of Special Olympics Illinois (Friday), Myron Noodleman (Friday), Skydivers (Saturday) and the ZOOperstars (Sunday) and great baseball action.
