He's back: Yarbrough returns to the Swing
August 31, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities, in conjunction with the St. Louis Cardinals, announced Wednesday that catcher Brandon Yarbrough has been promoted to the Swing of the Quad Cities from the short-season New Jersey Cardinals. To make room for Yarbrough, catcher Richie Cormier has been transferred to New Jersey.
Yarbrough, a former fifth-round selection in the 2003 draft, spent the first half of the 2005 season with the Swing. During an inconsistent first half, the 6-2, 180-pound catcher batted .214 with four home runs and 17 RBI, striking out 37 times while walking 12 times in 36 games. His first half was highlighted by fantastic performances on April 19, when he hit for the cycle at Kane County, and May 8, when he hit a two-out grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to beat Clinton.
Yarbrough has been with New Jersey since June 21, batting .255 with two home runs and 25 RBI in 51 games. He collected five hits and five RBI in an August 3 game at Tri-City, belting one of his two long balls.
Prior to the season, the Ellerbee, North Carolina, native was ranked as the 13th-best prospect in the Cardinals minor league system, according to Baseball America.
Cormier has not seen game action since signing with the Cardinals last Friday. Originally signed out of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University by Milwaukee, Cormier played three games with the West Virginia Power before being released by the Brewers.
A total of 58 players have suited up for the Swing this season, although three - Cormier, recently-added outfielder Sean Danielson, and catcher Brandon Marcelli - have not seen game action. The Swing roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster follows this release.
UP NEXT: The Swing and Kernels continue the four-game series on Tuesday night, when the Swing send Nick Webber (0-2, 5.14) to the mound against Fernando Rodriguez (7-9, 4.25). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and pre-game coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:45.
UP NEXT: The Swing will close out the 2005 regular season with a road trip through Cedar Rapids and Southwest Michigan. If they hold on to their current position they will qualify for postseason play, which would begin with a home game at John O'Donnell Stadium on Wednesday, September 7. For more information, keep posted at www.swingbaseball.com . Season-ticket packages are available for the 2006 season by calling the Swing at (563) 328-2000.
