
Ray sent to Giants in deadline deal

August 30, 2005 - Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Ronnie Ray was dealt to the San Francisco Giants along with former Kernels pitcher Dusty Bergman on Tuesday in exchange for left-handed relief pitcher Jason Christiansen. The deal came just one day before the cutoff date for postseason roster eligibility.
Ray, who joined the Kernels in June from Rancho Cucamonga, was 6-3 with a 3.42 ERA and 1 save in 19 games before being traded. Ray moved from the bullpen into the starting rotation in mid-July and was 4-2 as a starter, including victories in two of his last three starts for the surging Kernels. He also spent time with the Kernels in 2003 and 2004.
Bergman, a left-handed pitcher, spent most of 2000 with the Kernels and posted a 4-15 record with a 3.90 ERA. He made his major league debut with the Angels in 2004 and was with Triple-A Salt Lake at the time of the deal.Ray had not been immediately replaced on the Cedar Rapids roster.
