Kane County Cougars News Release
Battle Creek, MI - The Kane County Cougars, in the thick of the playoff race in the Western Division, pounded the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays for the second straight night, winning 7-2 on Wednesday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. Trent Peterson lasted 6 1/3 innings to record the win, and Myron Leslie led the 13-hit offensive attack with three base knocks of his own. Kane County has won four of its last five games during this final road trip of the regular season, and entered the game tied with Beloit for the second playoff spot in the division and two games behind Quad Cities for first place.
Peterson allowed a first-inning homer to Devil Rays shortstop Reid Brignac, but Nick Blasi blasted a two-run shot to left in the second off Eddie DeLaCruz for a 2-1 Cougars lead. Then Leslie doubled home Eddie Kim in the third for a 3-1 advantage. Three consecutive singles in the fifth chased DeLaCruz, and reliever Ryan Bitter walked Javier Herrera to bring in Travis Buck for a 4-1 score.
The Devil Rays got a run back against Peterson with Brignac's run-scoring double in the last of the fifth for a 4-2 score, but Kane County bolted ahead in the six, loading the bases again and drawing another walk from Bitter for a 5-2 lead. Reliever Tony Perez entered and tossed two wild pitches, scoring Luis Perez and Buck for the 7-2 affair that became the final. Peterson (3-2) lasted 6 1/3 innings, gave up two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out three to get the win in the spot start. Mike Mitchell and Dan Fyvie combined for 2 2/3 frames of scoreless relief to preserve the victory. DeLaCruz (6-5) suffered the loss for the Devil Rays.
The Cougars (34-31), who return home on Friday for the final four games of the regular season, will try to win the series on Thursday night at 6:05 CDT when Mike Rogers (6-7, 4.99) takes the mound against left-hander James Houser (7-8, 3.96) for the Devil Rays (34-31).
