Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - There was almost no medium in this game. The Dayton Dragons (56-78, 26-38) belted three home runs, including two by a torrid-hitting Adam Rosales, but it was not enough in a 5-4 loss to the Wisconsin TimberRattlers (74-60, 35-29), in front of a sellout crowd of 8,009 at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday night.

Julio Santiago (W, 7-3) picked up the win for Wisconsin despite taking a licking, surviving six innings along with six hits, four runs, no walks and 10 strikeouts. The blemishes came on his scoresheet in the form of home runs. The Dragons clocked three of them to count for all four runs scored, including Rosales' blasts in the first and fifth innings. Rosales' two solo homers, both in the same spot which was over the left-center wall, gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead in the first and brought the Miami Valley's team to within a run in the fifth.

Not a single baserunner would reach after that. Following Rosales' second round-tripper, Santiago and Jon Lockwood (SV, 3) combined to retire a staggering 13 consecutive hitters to end the game, with both hurlers combining for a whopping 16 strikeouts. Lockwood picked up the save in a perfect three innings of relief, striking out six Dragons on the evening.

Wisconsin jumped out front 2-1 after three innings off starter James Avery (ND), beginning with Avery's second wild pitch of the second inning which allowed Mike Wilson to score the TimberRattlers' first run of the night. Wisconsin didn't have to hit the ball out of the infield to score, as Wilson drew first base on a leadoff walk, advanced to second on the first wild pitch, and moved to third on a groundout before scoring.

Wisconsin then got their first lead of the evening on Brent Johnson's RBI single in the third, scoring Josh Womack who had reached base on a one-out triple.

The Dragons took their advantage in the game of tug-o-war in the fourth, with Bobby Mosby's eighth homer of the year, a two-run dinger to right off Santiago. Wisconsin then yanked back in the fifth, scoring three runs for a 5-3 lead. Following Wilson's RBI single off reliever Jon George (L, 5-8), Marshall Hubbard belted a monster two-run homer to right to help the TimberRattlers re-take the lead.

That set up Rosales' second homer of the night in the bottom of the inning, but the Dragons were clamped down thereafter.

Juan Frias (ND) helped keep the Dragons within striking distance with four strong innings of no-hit relief, allowing one walk, a hit batter and striking out three to extend a streak to 17 consecutive scoreless innings pitched. Frias has not allowed a run since August 12th, giving up a run in three innings against the Clinton LumberKings.

Rosales carried the Dragons with his two homers in tallying a 2-for-4 night, including two runs scored. Hubbard led Wisconsin's offense with a 2-for-4 night, including his two-run homer and a run scored.

The Dragons and TimberRattlers battle for the final time on Thursday at 7pm in the 2005 Fifth Third Field finale, when right-hander Joe Powers goes head-to-head with lefty Shawn Nottingham. The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1410-AM and on the Internet at www.daytondragons.com, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 pm.
