COMSTOCK PARK, MI - One day after the Whitecaps clinched their second consecutive playoff berth, South Bend rolled up three runs in two of the first three innings on the way to an 8-4 victory over West Michigan.
Josh Rainwater was touched for six runs (five earned) in three innings on the hill and took the loss for West Michigan. Rainwater yielded ten hits in his relatively short start.
In the first inning, West Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Luis Sabino.
But Wilkin Castillo led off the top of the second with his 6th home run of the year to tie the game, 1-1.
Later in the inning, Emilio Bonifacio singled in Orlando Mercado to give the Silver Hawks a 2-1 lead. Bonifacio scored on a hit by Carlos Gonzales for a 3-1 advantage.
In the third inning, South Bend added three more runs for a 6-1 edge.
Lavon Lewis pitched the next three innings for the Whitecaps and kept the Silver Hawks off the scoreboard. As a result, the 'Caps crept to within 6-3 on and RBI single by Jeff Frazier in the fifth and a run-scoring hit by Nick McIntyre in the seventh.
Anthony Tomey pitched a scoreless seventh, but allowed a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Both came on a double by Mercado, which pushed the game out of reach at 8-4.
Matt Parrish delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth for the Whitecaps final run of the night.
South Bend can clinch with a win over the Whitecaps on Thursday.
Silver Hawks starting pitcher Steven Jackson pitched the first five innings, allowed two runs on four hits earn his tenth victory of the season.
A Positive Note: The Whitecaps magic number to clinch the top seed in the second half Eastern Division playoff race was reduced to 3 when Southwest Michigan was beaten 7-2 by Kane County.
The Last Stand: The final home stand of the regular season for the Whitecaps concludes Thursday against South Bend. LHP Kellen Raab (7-5, 4.48) will be on the mound for the Silver Hawks. RHP Jair Jurrjens (11-6, 3.42) is slated to pitch for West Michigan.
