West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps and Citadel Broadcasting have teamed up to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Starting Thursday, donations will be accepted at Fifth Third Ballpark and radio remotes at any of Citadel's four stations, WBBL, KLQ, LAV and Thunder 94.5. All of the money raised will go directly to the American Red Cross Natural Disaster Fund and anyone who makes a donation will receive a "buy one, get one free voucher" for the Whitecaps first home playoff game on Wednesday, September 7.
"The American Red Cross is working closely with the United States government as well as officials in five states to help the tens of thousands of our fellow citizens who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina," said Red Cross Board of Directors member Deb Kay. "We are mobilizing every available resource from across the country including thousands of staff and volunteers, but it will truly take the generosity of each and every one of us to bring the necessary relief to our neighbors."
This is not the first time the Whitecaps have been involved in a hurricane relief effort. In 2004, the organization worked with the Red Cross to raise funds for the victims of Hurricanes Ivan and Charley.
"We are doing everything we can to get behind the people of Louisiana and Mississippi," said Whitecaps CEO Lew Chamberlin. "Not surprisingly, efforts have popped up all around minor league baseball and we're no different. We feel it is our obligation to get involved in something like this."
Donations will be accepted at Fifth Third Ballpark during normal business hours and during remaining regular season home games. Donations will also be accepted at Citadel Broadcasting radio remotes, and locations for upcoming remotes can be found at www.whitecaps-baseball.com. The Whitecaps' first home playoff game is Wednesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. and donations will be accepted until 5 p.m. that day.
