
Devil Rays inch closer to playoff berth

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays lost 7-2 to the Kane County Cougars Wednesday night at C.O. Brown Stadium but inched to within one game of a playoff berth after the Lansing Lugnuts were defeated 3-1 in Game 1 of their double-header.
Reid Brignac's two hits and two RBI led the Devil Rays as he hit his 15th home run in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. Kane County answered against Eddie De La Cruz with runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth to build a 7-2 lead. Southwest Michigan's second run came in the fifth as Brignac doubled in Fernando Perez.
Kane County totalled 13 hits and seven walks in giving the Rays their second straight loss in this series. The two teams square off again on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. It is Western Michigan Night where any WMU student with a valid ID or any fan wearing WMU clothing will receive $2 off any adult ticket purchased at the box office. To support Charitable Union, any fan who brings a new or gently used coat to the game will receive a buy one, get one ticket voucher. The Blues/Rock band Streetsmart will play in the left field bar after the game.
James Houser will start for the Devil Rays against Mark Rogers for Kane County on the final Thirsty Thursday of the season. After the Lugnuts split their double-header against Fort Wayne, the magic number for the Devil Rays dropped to one, meaning one Rays win or Lansing loss Thursday will to secure a playoff spot.
