Devil Rays shutout by Peoria
August 21, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays fell to the Peoria Chiefs on Monday afternoon by a score of 6-0. The Rays and the Chiefs split the four game series at C.O. Brown. With the loss, the Rays will have the first losing season in Battle Creek in ten years.
Jeff Kamrath got the start for the Rays on Monday. As usual, he received no run support, which is something that has plagued him all season. Kamrath got off to a shaky start, giving up four earned runs in the top of the fourth. He kept his composure and pitched well for the rest of his outing, despite a solo home run by Kyle Reynolds in the third inning. Kamrath tossed four innings and gave up five hits and five earned runs with six strikeouts.
The Devil Rays pitching staff has been spectacular this season. During the game, they broke the franchise record for strikeouts in a season that was set by the Battle Creek Yankees in 2004. The previous record was 1086 and after today's outing the total is up to 1094.
The Rays couldn't put anything together on Monday afternoon and failed to score a run for the 16th time this season.
Neil Walton had a very good series against Peoria. Walton, who has struggled at the plate this season, went 2-4 on Monday and 10-15 in the series. Walton had a batting average of .178 when the series started and improved it to .196.
Cesar Suarez also went 2-4 in the game. Jackson Brennan went 1-4 with a double.
The Midwest League has off days on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Devil Rays kick off a four game series on Thursday. Every Thursday is Thirsty Thursday at C.O. Brown and this one is going to have a fun twist. As always fans can get their favorite draft beer or Pepsi fountain pop for only $1. The Devil Rays are going back to the days of big hair and stonewashed jeans for 80's Night! There will be 80's themed promotions and music playing throughout the game. Instead of a live band, there will be 80's Karaoke in the TDS Metrocom Left Field Bar after the game. Thursday also marks the start of "Battle Creek's Coolest Yard Sale". 80's Night is brought to you by Super Rock 104.9.
