Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 21, 2006) Luke Hochevar pitched four shutout innings and the Burlington Bees (23-35, 58-67) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Swing of the Quad Cities (34-23, 68-57) at Community Field tonight. The Bees avoided being swept in this four-game series and evened the season series at three.
Hochevar used 48 of his 50 pitches to work through four innings and one batter in the fifth. In the top of the first, he issued a one-out walk to Casey Rowlett and a two-out single to Bryan Anderson, but struck out two and got out of the inning when Rowlett was thrown out trying to advance to third on a pitch in the dirt. Hochevar, the #1 overall pick in this year's draft, retired the next nine in a row and didn't allow another baserunner until hitting Tyler Greene with a pitch to start the fifth and had to come out because of his pitch limit. Rayner Oliveros came in and retired the next three batters to end the inning and strand Greene on base. Through two starts, Hochevar's line is: 6IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 5K.
The Bees built an early lead against Swing starter Adam Daniels. In the bottom of the second, Brady Everett lined a leadoff double to left-center, went to third on a groundout by Jeff Howell, and scored on a wild pitch. In the third, Felix Peralta led off with a triple to left-center and scored on a one-out double by Josh Johnson. The Bees extended the lead in the fifth. Jose Duarte reached on an infield single and stole second. With one out, Mario Lisson hit a ball hard towards third and Nelson made a diving stop towards the line. His throw to first was in the dirt and skipped past Mark Hamilton allowing Duarte to score and Lisson to go to second. Lisson was credited with a hit, but no RBI, as Nelson was charged with an error to account for the extra bases. Daniels (7-11) then gave way to Victor Moreno out of the Swing bullpen. Moreno struck out Miguel Vega, but Lisson stole third and scored on a single by Everett to extend the Bees' lead to 4-0.
The Swing got an unearned run in the sixth and seventh innings to get on the board. After a leadoff single by Jose Salazar in the sixth, Lisson missed a pop-up in foul territory off the bat of Nelson and was charged with an error. Nelson took advantage with a double that bounced over the wall in right-center. After a lineout, John Jay brought in Salazar with a groundout to second before Anderson struck out to end the inning.
The Bees added their final run in the bottom of the seventh. Johnson led off with a double against Moreno and the Swing turned to Matt Trent in relief. Lisson hit a bouncing ball to third and as Nelson threw to first, Johnson took off for third. Lisson was out, but Matt Hamilton's throw was in the dirt and skipped to the wall for an error that allowed Johnson to score to extend the lead to 5-1. Trent finished the inning and Danny Borne worked a scoreless eighth.
After a scoreless seventh, David Henninger gave up a leadoff walk to Daryl Jones in the eighth. Jones stole second and went to third when Howell's throw went into centerfield for an error. After a strikeout, Nelson brought in Jones with a sacrifice fly to center that made it a 5-2 game. Kraig Schambough came on for the save in the ninth and allowed a double to Jay and a walk, but got a double play. Jay scored on an infield single by Hamilton and Chad Gabriel reached on an infield hit before Schambough struck out Jones to nail down his 11th save of the year.
The Bees are off Tuesday and Wednesday and will be back in action on Thursday night at Kane County. RH Michael Penn will get the start. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
