Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - Justin Justice's three-run homer in the first inning turned out to be all of the offense that the West Michigan Whitecaps would need as they took a 3-1 decision over the Lansing Lugnuts at Fifth Third Ballpark Monday night. The win allowed the Whitecaps to earn a series split with Lansing.
After Pedro Cotto reached on a fielder's choice in the first and Cameron Maybin drew a walk, Justice blasted a homer deep to right field to put the Whitecaps ahead 3-0.
Lansing got it's only run of the game in the third inning when Jesus Gonzalez reached after being hit by a pitch and scored later on a fielder's choice.
The Lugnuts had another opportunity to score in the fourth when they loaded the bases with two away, but Burke Badenhop was able to work himself out of the jam with a strikeout.
Badenhop (13-3) was strong for the Whitecaps, throwing six innings and allowing just one run on six hits while picking up the win.
Anthony Claggett nailed down his ninth save of the year for the Whitecaps by pitching a flawless ninth.
Adrian Martin (7-2) suffered the loss for the Lugnuts, surrendering all three runs in the first inning on the Justice homer. He gave up five hits and struck out five. Both of his losses this season have come to the Whitecaps.
Lansing (65-60, 25-33) will take the next two days off before returning home to Oldsmobile Park to open a four game series with the South Bend SilverHawks Thursday night. Sean Stidfole (6-6, 4.94) will get the call for the Lugnuts, while Matt Torra will make the start for the SilverHawks. Thursday is Corona Buffet Beach Party Night, with beer and soda on-sale for $2. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
