Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning, capped by Flint Wipke's two run home run, and then the bullpen held on for a 6-5 Kernels win over Kane County on Sunday afternoon.
The win keeps the Kernels at 26-30 in the second half and it's only the second win against the Cougars in eleven games this season. It also improved the Kernels' road trip record to 3-4 and the Kernels can pull to an even 4-4 with a win on Monday night.
Amalio Diaz (2-0) gave up eight hits and three runs over five innings but struck out seven and walked only two to pick up the win. Mike Pete and Chris Howell held the Cougars until Ryan Aldridge took over in the eighth inning to close the door and pick up his 24th save of the season.
Flint's home run was his sixth of the season and he finished the day 2 for 4. Stantrel Smith had a triple in the seventh and scored on a throwing error. His run was key because it proved to the final margin of victory. Marco Albano, Jordan Renz and Dallas Morris each had an RBI and Larry Infante went 2 for 4, the only other Kernel with more than one hit.
The Kernels will look to pick up the split with Kane County on Monday night as Anthony Ortega (1-6) starts for the Kernels against Ken Durost for Kane County. Game time is 7 pm.
The Kernels will have two days off, on Tuesday and Wednesday, and return home for the final eight game home series of the 2006 season on Thursday, August 24th with four games each against Beloit and Burlington. Tickets for the final home stand are available on-line at www.kernels.com
