Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - Anthony Recker launched a mammoth, one-out solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning Monday night to propel the Kane County Cougars to a 2-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 5,807 at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars won the series, are 10-2 against the Kernels this season and head into consecutive off days having won seven of their last nine games.
The Cougars took the lead in the fourth inning against Anthony Ortega when Frank Martinez singled home Jose Pineda. Meanwhile Kane County starter Kenny Durost posted his best outing as a Cougar. He was perfect through four innings and had faced the minimum through five before the Kernels scored in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Durost hit Marco Albano with a pitch to bring the score to 1-1.
Both starters left after seven innings. Durost gave up his run on four hits, walked one and fanned seven in the no-decision. Joe Newby took the next 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Brad Kilby logged 1 1/3 frame, as the Cougars' bullpen has not allowed an earned run in its last 33 1/3 innings.
Recker broke the tie and ended the game against Daniel Hawkins, smashing a one-out pitch well over the fence in left for his 13th home run to set off the celebration.
The Cougars (35-23), who won three out of four against both West Michigan and Cedar Rapids, get two off days before they continue the 10-game homestand Thursday night against Burlington. Joe Piekarz (7-6, 3.25) will toe the rubber at 7 CT.
