Jake McGee becomes strikeout king of BC Franchise

August 30, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays and the Beloit Snappers faced off in a double-header on Tuesday night to make up for Monday's rain-out. The fans that came out for Red Hot Chicago Dime Dog Night got their moneys worth as there was nearly six hours of baseball action to be enjoyed. The first game of the double dip went into extra innings as it took eleven innings for the Rays to pull away from the Snappers.

The highlight of the evening was Jake McGee's return to the mound after a two week stint on the disabled list. McGee needed only two strikeouts to break the franchise record for strikeouts in a single season that was set in 1997 by Robb Welch and was tied last week by McGee's roommate, Wade Davis. McGee put the record behind him as he fanned two of the first three batters he faced. He lasted four innings and allowed only one hit which was a solo home run by Eli Tintor in the fourth frame. McGee fanned a total of six batters to extend his franchise record to 163 K's.

Jeff Kamrath took over for McGee in the fifth inning and tossed two solid innings. Kamrath recorded one strikeout and gave up one hit before handing the ball over to Greg Dupas.

Dupas, who is second in the Midwest League in saves (24), entered the game with at 2-1 lead to protect. Dupas walked the first batter he faced and that runner advanced to second when Dupas tossed a wild pitch to the next hitter. The runner then moved to third on a ground out. Dupas' sixth blown save came when Jose Leger hit a sacrifice fly left field and the run scored to tie the game.

The ballgame went 11 innings before the Rays finally rallied and won on a Garrett Groce RBI single.

The D-Rays pitching staff held the Snappers to only two hits in the eleven inning marathon.
