Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs trailed from the third inning on but tied it in the ninth and walked-off in the 11th to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-7 Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. Kyle Reynolds tied it with a one-out single in the ninth and Yusuf Carter was the 11th inning hero as came through with a game-winning infield single to catapult the Chiefs to their second win in three games against the Rattlers.
Trailing 7-6 heading into the ninth, the Chiefs came up with a big hit to tie it. Reynolds ripped a one-out single through the right side to score Valerio Heredia to tie it at seven. Two innings later, Jesus Valdez reached on a dropped pop up. After a sacrifice bunt by Heredia, Jake Whitesides poked one through the left side with Valdez moving to third. Reynolds was intentionally walked to load the bases for Carter. The Chiefs slugger came to the plate and tapped one slowly to third. Third baseman Alex Liddi charged it, gloved it and tried to cut down Valdez at the plate, but he slid in just safely as the Chiefs completed the comeback win.
The Timber Rattlers got on the board first in the top of the second. With two outs and runners on first and second, Posluszny doubled to right to score both runners. The Rattlers would add another run in the frame on a double steal. Ron Garth stole second base, and on the throw by Lalli to try to cut him down, Posluszny took off from third to come to the plate and make it a 3-0 ballgame.
The Chiefs needed just one swing to get back into it in their half of the second. Carter walked to lead off the inning, and with one away Davy Gregg reached on a bunt single. Robinson Chirinos came up and belted a three-run shot to left, his ninth of the season to knot the game up at three apiece.
With the score tied at three in the third, Wisconsin do ubled their run total to go on top for good. Eddy Hernandez doubled home Chris Minaker with Adam Moore moving up to third on the play. With one away, Jeff Flaig singled on a liner to center to score Moore. With Hernandez at third and still one away, Alex Liddi delivered a sacrifice to regain a three-run lead for Wisconsin. The Chiefs had a chance to get right back in it in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and nobody out. However, Peoria managed only run that frame after a double play groundout off of the bat of Alberto Garcia to bring home Blake Lalli.
The Rattlers got that run right back their very next at bat on a sacrifice fly by Stan Posluszny to give Wisconsin a 7-4 advantage. The Chiefs trimmed their deficit down to one in the bottom of inning number five. Yusuf Carter smacked a double over the head of Hernandez in centerfield to score Norwood. Carter came in to score all the way from second on a fielding error by the second baseman Garth to make it a 7-6 score.
Marco Carrillo struggled in his Chiefs debut. He lasted just three innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits while striking out one. Jon Mueller gave up one run over three innings of work out of the pen. Justin Rayborn was the third pitcher of the night for the Chiefs and tossed two scoreless frames. Matt Avery chipped in with three impressive scoreless innings to pick up the win. Wisconsin starter David Asher allowed allowing five earned runs on eight hits over his five innings of work.
