Bees Receive Pitching Help

Burlington, IA (August 30, 2006) "" After promotions and injuries, the Burlington Bees pitching staff was down to nine available arms for the last four days, but reinforcements are arriving today. The Kansas City Royals have assigned right-handed pitchers Yovany Damico and Angelo Morales to the Bees active roster and the two will join the team in Cedar Rapids tonight. The Bees active roster is back to 25 players, although Erik Cordier and Matt Kniginyzky won't pitch again this season due to injuries.

Damico started the year with the Bees and was 1-5 with a 4.09 ERA and one save in 25 relief appearances. In 50.2 innings, he allowed 49 hits and 16 walks while striking out 48. He was re-assigned to Arizona on August 5th. He made five starts while in Arizona and was 3-1 with a 3.96 ERA. In 25 innings, he allowed 27 hits and six walks while striking out 47. Damico also pitched with the Bees in 2005 and was voted to the Midwest League Western Division All-Star team at mid-season. For the year, he was 2-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 35 appearances and struck out 72 in 75.1 innings.

Morales leaves Arizona with a 6-6 record and a 4.50 ERA over 14 starts. He leads the team with 76 innings pitched and has allowed 98 hits and 16 walks while striking out 47. The highlight of his season was his first career complete game and shutout in game one of a double-header against the Giants on July 22nd. He allowed two hits and no walks while striking out four. Morales, 20, hails from Panama and was signed by the Royals in August of 2002. He made his professional debut at the age of 16 with Salcedo in the Dominican Summer League in 2003 and was named the team's Pitcher of the Year. This was his third season in the Arizona League.

The Bees and Cedar Rapids Kernels were suspended by rain last night in the top of the second inning with the score tied at one. The teams will pick up the action tonight at Veterans Memorial Stadium starting at 6:00. After last night's game is completed, the teams will play tonight's regularly scheduled contest as a seven-inning game. After tonight, the Bees will have just five games left in the regular season and only two left at Community Field on Friday and Saturday night. Both games start at 7:00. Luke Hochevar, the #1 overall pick in this year's draft, will make his final start with the Bees on Friday and Saturday is Fan Appreciation night.
