Burlington Bees News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA (August 30, 2006) The Burlington Bees (27-38, 62-70) came out swinging to win 7-1 in the completion of Tuesday's nights rain suspended game, but the Cedar Rapids Kernels (30-34, 61-73) mustered an unearned run on one hit to win 1-0 in tonight's second game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Bees lead this series 2-1 while the season series is tied 7-7.
The action was picked up tonight with the game tied at one and the Bees batting with Jeff Howell on first and one out in the top of the second. Amalio Diaz took over on the mound and struck out Valentino Arce, who had an 0-2 count leftover from last night. Felix Peralta and Ethien Santana followed with base hits and Santana's drove in Howell for a 2-1 Bees' lead. In the third inning, Miguel Vega singled and with two outs, Carlos Arroyo hit a towering fly ball down the right field line that went over the foul pole and was called a home run despite the protests of the Kernels bench. It was Arroyo's first homer of the season and the Bees led 4-1. Santana reached on a bunt single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vega in the fifth and Mario Lisson drove in two with a base hit in the sixth to cap the scoring and knock Diaz out of the game. Daniel Hawkins came in and finished the final four innings in relief without allowing any more runs.
The Bees got stellar pitching from Rayner Oliveros (7-4) who picked up for last night's starter Michael Penn. Oliveros worked through six innings and allowed three hits and no walks while striking out four. Chris Hayes finished the final two innings in relief and allowed just one hit. Kernels' starter Brok Butcher (3-3) got the loss because Howell was his responsibilitye Howell was his responsibility from where the game was suspended on Tuesday night.
In the nightcap, David Henninger pitched five shutout innings and allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two. The Kernels didn't get a hit until the fifth when Josh Davies led off with a double. He was erased quickly when he was doubled off on a lineout by Stantrel Smith. Henninger has made three appearances three appearances against the Kernels this season and hasn't allowed an earned run in 11.1 innings. Tim Didjurgis was making his first start for the Kernels after 40 relief appearances. He struck out the side in the first and allowed four hits and struck out five through 4.1 innings. In the top of the fifth, Howell doubled and moved to third on a base hit by Peralta, but the Bees couldn't score as Darren O'Day came out of the bullpen and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning. O'Day worked a perfect sixth.
Cody Harkcom took over for Henninger in the bottom of the sixth inning and with one out, walked Marco Albano. Harkcom tried a pickoff play to first and had Albano breaking for second, but the throw was in the dirt and skipped past Vega and went into the Kernels bullpen for a two-base error, the Bees third error of the game. Dallas Morris followed with a fly ball to right-center that allowed Albano to tag up and score from third and get the Kernels on the board. The run held up as Tim Mattison finished the top of the seventh for his fourth save. Brady Everett lined a one-out double to left, but the run was stranded. Harkcom (3-3) got his second loss in four days. O'Day (3-1) picked up the win.
The Bees and Kernels wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RH Angelo Morales, just up from the Arizona Rookie League today, will make his Bees debut on the mound against RH Tommy Mendoza (11-6, 4.18) for the Kernels. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
