Robinson leads Swing to sixth win in a row

Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities won their sixth consecutive ballgame with a 7-2 win over the Kane County Cougars Wednesday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, breaking a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning by scoring the final five runs of the ballgame. Shane Robinson went 2-for-4 with a triple and four runs batted in as the Swing were able to capitalize on four errors committed by the Cougars.

Quad Cities (40-24, 74-58) matched their longest winning streak of the season with their sixth win in a row, a feat they accomplished during a first-half road trip that lasted from May 31-June 4. Kane County (37-28, 77-57) dropped 3.5 games behind the first-place Swing with the loss, and Quad Cities has won seven of the 11 meetings between the two teams this season.

For the third time in as many games this series the Swing were able to get on the board first. They did it in the opening inning, as Robinson drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base on an errant throw after a pickoff attempt. With one away Jon Jay drove a base hit to center and when the throw from Jose Pineda came home it bounced away from the catcher, allowing Robinson to race home for the 1-0 lead.

But Quad Cities trailed by a 2-1 score when Casey Rowlett led off the bottom of the third with a double into the left field corner. Jay followed with another single, and when the ball slipped underneath the glove of left-fielder Matt Sulentic, Rowlett scored to even the game at 2-2.

The deadlock remained until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Quad Cities put three runs on the board to take control. Men were at the corners with one away when Kane County went to the bullpen, but Robinson greeted reliever John Herrera by driving a two-run triple into the left-center field gap. With the infield drawn in, Rowlett added a run-scoring single as the Swing snatched a 5-2 edge.

The home team added to the lead in the seventh, as once again it was Robinson coming up with the big hit. The bases were loaded with one away when the Cougars brought the infield in again, and the fifth-round pick delivered a single up the middle that plated Chad Gabriel and Daniel Nelson. Robinson's third and fourth RBI of the night gave Quad Cities a comfortable 7-2 lead.

Adam Ottavino (2-3) picked up the win after allowing two runs - one earned - on four hits in six innings of work, striking out five and walking three. After a rocky beginning to his start, the Brooklyn native settled down to retire 11 of the last 12 batters he faced without giving up a hit after the third inning.

The loss went to Joe Piekarz (8-7), who gave up four runs - one earned - on seven hits. He struck out seven over 5.1 innings while issuing three walks, but could not overcome the four defensive miscues behind him.

UP NEXT: The Swing will conclude their series with the Kane County Cougars on Thursday night, as RHP Trey Hearne (12-3, 2.20) will take the mound opposite RHP Kenny Durost (0-1, 5.06). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 6:15 p.m.
