Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White announced today that the Dallas Stars have officially reassigned Iowa Stars goaltender Mike Smith to the Canadian National Team. Smith joins Team Canada for the upcoming Loto Cup Hockey Tournament and is the only American Hockey League player to be chosen to play in this Tournament.

Located in Piestany, Slovakia, the Loto Cup is a three-day three-game round robin tournament pitting teams from Switzerland, Lativa and host-country Slovakia against one-another. Prior to the December 15-17th Loto Cup tournament dates, Team Canada will play one exhibition game versus Italy in Turin, Italy, the site of the 2006 Olympics, on December 13th.

A native of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Smith departs Iowa with a 6-8 record, a 2.50 Goals Against Average and a .915 Save Percentage. Smith ranks 8th overall in the American Hockey League with that 2.50 GAA. He will be coached by Head Coach Marc Habscheid and Assistant Coach and former NHL'er, Kirk Muller.

Team Canada captured bronze at year's Loto Cup and this year's roster includes former NHL forwards Yves Sarault, Eric Perrin, Josh Holden, Brandon Reid, Dominic Pittis and Glen Metropolit. All of the aforementioned players are currently playing in Switzerland. Veteran goaltender Corey Hirsch of Sweden's Malmo club will be Smith's goaltending partner.

In other transactions today, Iowa has released defenseman Jonathan Zion from his Professional Tryout Contract and Dallas has reassigned center David Bararuk. Both will be joining the Stars ECHL affiliate, the Idaho Steelheads. Zion skated in five games for Iowa, registering six penalty minutes: 5(0/0/0)6. Bararuk has appeared in two total games for Iowa, October 8th and during his recent recall to Iowa on December 10th.

NEXT HOME GAME: The Iowa Stars welcome the Chicago Wolves back to the Wells Fargo Arena on Friday, December 16th. Join KCCI Channel 8 and the Stars as they join the US Marine Corps and their Toys for Tots program. Marines will be on hand to collect new toys and/or monetary donations prior to the game.
