Cleveland Barons News Release

Flashback

12/6/05 Cleveland 2, Toronto 4 - The Barons returned home from their four game trip through Texas only to be defeated by the Toronto Marlies 4-2 at The Q. After a scoreless first period, the Barons lit the lamp first with an early second period goal by Mike Iggulden only 58 seconds into the period. Josh Hennessy and Matt Carkner assisted on Iggulden's team leading 9th goal of the season. The Marlies responded with three unanswered goals, the third on the power play by John Pohl, his 14th of the season. The Barons notched a late second period goal to cut the deficit when Hennessy banked one off the skate of Toronto goaltender J.F. Racine to make the score 3-2 going into intermission. Lukas Kaspar and Josh Gorges assisted on the goal at the 18:38 mark of the period. Toronto halted any Barons comeback as they went on to score the only goal of the third period when Tyler Beechey grabbed a rebound and slipped the puck by Barons goaltender Dimitri Patzold to make the score 4-2.

12/9/05 Cleveland 5, Toronto 2 - The Barons traveled north of the border for another match up with the Marlies, but this time the Barons prevailed at Ricoh Coliseum. Barons goaltender Nolan Schaefer returned from San Jose and made his first start for the Barons since October 15th. Schaefer played like an NHL goaltender, stopping 33 of 35 Marlie shooters and earning the #1 Star of the Game. The Barons offense struck first when Matt Carkner's slap shot from the point bounced off a couple of skates and into the Marlies net, giving the Barons a 1-0 lead. Then with only 33 seconds left in the first period, Tom Cavanagh poked the puck off of Marlies defenseman Jay Harrison's stick and past a surprised J.F. Racine for a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. Toronto responded in the second period with a goal by Harrison 3:31 into the period. The Barons would then take advantage of the power play when Steve Bernier converted just over the half-way point of the second to give the Barons a two goal lead. Toronto quickly responded when Brendan Bell scored from the blue line with 7:35 left in the period. In the third, the Barons shut the door on the Marlies but not until late in the period. Tim Conboy scored on the power play with just under two minutes remaining and Josh Hennessy sealed the win with an empty net goal.

12/10/05 Cleveland 4, Grand Rapids 2 - The Barons carried their momentum into Van Andel Arena and again had superb goaltending from Nolan Schaefer as they defeated Grand Rapids 4-2. Schaefer provided the defense and Mike Iggulden, goal and two assists, sparked the offense as the Barons shut down the AHL's leading offensive unit (106 goals in 27 games). The Griffins got on the board first when Kent McDonnell scored on the power play just 2:12 into the game. The Barons responded with a power play goal a few minutes later when Patrick Rissmiller squeezed one past Grand Rapids goaltender Jimmy Howard. Iggulden and Ray DiLauro provided the assists. The Barons scored again with 10:57 remaining in the first when Shane Joseph jammed in a rebound from Iggulden's initial shot. The Barons took the 2-1 lead through intermission and into the third period, as the second period saw no scoring by either team. Grand Rapids struck first in the third to tie the game at two with Donald MacLean's 12th goal of the season. Again, the Barons answered when Iggulden netted his team leading 10th goal of the season with 10:08 remaining. The Barons closed out the Griffins when Steve Bernier found the back of an empty net to give the Barons the victory.

12/11/05 Cleveland 1, Houston 4 - The Barons failed to convert three wins in three nights as they were downed by the Houston Aeros 4-1 in the first of a four game home stand. The Barons looked sharp early when Garrett Stafford scored a power play goal on a slap shot from the blue line in the first period. Patrick Rissmiller and Josh Hennessy provided the assist. Cleveland took the 1-0 lead into the dressing room but could not find a way to beat Aeros goaltender Seamus Kotyk the rest of the game. Houston came out in the second and quickly tied the game at one with a shorthanded goal from Erik Reitz. The rest of the night belonged to Kirby Law who scored the Aeros second and third goals and assisted Josh Olson on the fourth, which came as shorthanded. The Barons are now 0-3-0-0 against Houston this season with only one game between the two remaining.

Player Appearances

Barons center Tom Cavanagh will be speaking at the Booster Club Meeting on Tuesday, December 13th.

This Goal is for the Kids

The Barons have partnered with the Cleveland Clinic in a unique program called "This Goal is for the Kids". The program allows individuals and business to "score goals" for the Children's Hospital by helping to raise money to provide health care to local families who cannot otherwise afford it. Participants can purchase a membership level (assist, goal, hat trick) which earns them tickets, on-ice recognition, a group outing, and recognition at all home games. There are additional perks as you go higher in the levels which include a suite event with the President of the Barons and hockey legend Jock Callander, and a meet-and-greet with the players. Most importantly, a portion of each plan purchased is donated to The Children's Hospital.
